15.4-inch MacBook May Be In Development
by , 8:30 AM EST, February 15th, 2007
A larger 15.4-inch display MacBook may be on the way sometime during Apple's second quarter for 2007. DigiTimes reports that the new MacBook is intended to fill what some see as a gap between the current 13.3-inch model and the MacBook Pro.
Sources in Taiwan claim that the new model will be manufactured by Quanta Computer - the same company that produces the 15.4 and 17-inch MacBook Pro. The 13.3-inch MacBook is built by Asustek Computer. The selling price for the new format MacBook is expected to be only slightly higher than the current models thanks to the relatively low cost of the larger LCD panels.
DigiTimes regularly reports on leaked information about upcoming Apple products, but in many cases those devices never materialize. As always, take these types of reports with the usual grain of salt until an actual product hits store shelves.

I would love for Apple to bring back the 12" PowerBook to the line up. I loved mine right up to the end when I needed a replacement and bought a black MacBook. I would buy a smaller MacBookPro in a flash if one were available. I bought my 12" PowerBook right after they were introduced - I have the life size poster of Yao Ming and Vern Apple used in their resellers.
I'd love a 10" widescreen with NO optical drive, superlight, huge hard drive, tons of RAM, maybe even a smaller-than-standard keyboard, but of course Bluetooth, Firewire, lots of USB. How often do I use the optical drive on my MacBook? Pretty close to never. I rip movies from my 20" iMac and put them into iTunes on the MacBook (or video iPod for my 3 year old daughter). I can transfer large files with the MacBook as a target-disk --- MAKE IT SMALLER, STEVE! No, not an over-priced Pro model! A take it anywhere machine, which is primarly hooked up to an external display and keyboard... sorta like a Mini, but more useful...
I have a slightly-long-in-the-tooth 15" PowerBook G4. I really want to replace it with a MacBook. I don't need the extra bells and whistles of the Mac Book Pro. Also after having the aluminum case for a few years and working with a 12" G3 iBook* here in the shop I find that I really prefer a plastic case. However, I'm hesitant to go to the smaller screen. I do a fair amount of web editing and I really need 1280x854. I use all that space. I think I could put a similar resolution on the existing MacBook but on the 13.4" screen that is starting to get a bit small for these old eyes.

After having kicked myself in the butt for accepting the 12" PowerBook with its LCD screen that shifts color and brightness like something out of 1998! Unfortunately, the 13" viewing angle isn't THAT much more stable.
Hopefully, they can find a panel for up-and-coming MacBooks that have accurate and stable color/brightness at a WIDE RANGE of viewing angles (horizontally AND vertically!)
Seriously. I love my 12" PB, but the screen sucks. It's not very bright and the contrast/color shift with even the slightest change in vertical viewing angle is beyond dramatic.
I use a CRT for color critical work, but sometimes I need to use the laptop for basic corrections and I never feel like I can trust it, even minutes after calibration.
