WWAN Support Update 1.0 Improves Novatel Support

WWAN Support Update 1.0 Improves Novatel Support

by , 7:45 AM EST, February 20th, 2007

Apple released the WWAN Support Update 1.0 on Monday with support for additional Novatel wireless products. WWAN is a wireless data system used by many cell phone services. The update adds support for these adapters:

Cingular
  • Novatel Merlin XU870 ExpressCard (HSDPA)
Sprint
  • Novatel Wireless Merlin EX720 Express Card (EVDO Rev. A)
  • Novatel Wireless Ovation U720 USB Modem (USB Adapter, EVDO Rev. A)
Verizon
  • Novatel XV620 ExpressCard (EVDO Rev. 0)
  • Novatel V740 ExpressCard (EVDO Rev. A)
  • Novatel Wireless Ovation U720 (USB Adapter, EVDO Rev. A)

The WWAN Support Update requires Mac OS X 10.4.8 or higher and an Intel-based Mac laptop computer. It is free, and available for download at the Apple Support Web site.

Apple and Steve Jobs prove to be disloyal to Mac users by abandoning the "older" Mac user base ... by older I mean G4 based laptops.

Actually, Apple and Jobs are even more disloyal. I can't run Tiger on my PowerBook 100. That's UNFAIR! I want to be able to burn DVDs, play iTunes, use my iSight, print on my Canon printers, make a movie, play "Jets 'n' Guns," sync with my Palm TX, view my pictures in iPhoto, and run java and flash pages on my PowerBook 100.

Probably because of the fact that ExpressCard is not on any of the G4 'books. However, found this online:

"A virtual pat on the back for EVDOforum users Mac.Intosh for prepackaging the required drivers into a simple installation. Sprint Novatel U720 Rev. A USB EVDO Modem was successfully tested on the following machines: a 2.33 Ghz MacBook Pro, 1.33 GHz G4 iBook, and 2.66 Mac Pro."

So, there are drivers available for at least some of the usb offerings for G4 machines.

Subject: Novatel U720 problem

I have used the U720 on my Powerbook since Feb 07 with no problems after downloading a patch for it. But just recently my hardrive failed and lost all data with no backup (I know what a knucklehead).....

New harddrive installed and are unable to locate the download to get my Sprint Novatel U720 to function again.

Mac Powerbook G4 OS X 10.3.9

Need help PLEASE.....

Thanks in advance.....

Subject: Wireless broadband security...

Please post known security issues while using a WWAN device.

I am using the Sprint Novatel Ovation U720 on my MacBook Pro (Intel, 2.33 GHz) without any problems since 2/2007... good service on all my road trips, albeit slow at times, but I can live with the variable connection speeds.

I'm concerned primarily with just how "secure" this dedicated phone number is against lurkers and compromised data, etc.

Your insight is very welcomed, and thank you in advance.
