Jobs, Gates to Make Joint Appearance at D Conference

by , 12:10 PM EST, February 20th, 2007

Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates are making a rare joint appearance at the Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference in May. The two will discuss the history and future of the digital revolution on stage with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher in an unrehearsed and unscripted session.

Both Mr. Jobs and Mr. Gates have spoken at prior D conferences, but have never been on stage together.

In addition to participating the joint interview, Mr. Jobs will be interviewed about the latest developments at Apple, including the iPhone and Apple TV, in a different session.

The D conference is conducted as a series of interviews, and does not include "canned" speeches. Additional information about the D conference is available at the All Things Digital Web site.

I wouldn't expect any kind of celebrity billionaire grudge match, but it will be interesting to see Jobs and Gates together in an unscripted atmosphere--maybe get a sense of how they really relate to each other. It would be great if Jobs suggested (as he apparently did in the past) that Gates should drop acid just once.

It would have been fun to sit at this table:

They've been in the same room before. Heck, they probably have shared plane rides before without reporters ever catching wind of it.

Of course, but the point is that this time there *will* be reporters (with cameras and microphones), so we'll get to see and hear their interaction. When has that happened in recent memory (unscripted)?

Well you know how it's going to come off - Gates will be as dull as ditch-water, and the rest will be dominated by Mossberg and Jobs. I'm just sooo glad they didn't ask Ballmer to attend!
