Apple Ranks Fifth in January Notebook Computer Sales [UPDATED]

Apple Ranks Fifth in January Notebook Computer Sales [UPDATED]

by , 1:20 PM EDT, March 13th, 2007

Based on NPD Group's sales numbers, Apple ranked fifth in the the U.S. in notebook computer sales in January capturing 10.1 percent of the market. Bloomberg.com reported the numbers Tuesday.

Hewlett-Packard was number one with 23.5 percent, Toshiba was number two with 18.5 percent, Lenovo was number three with 13.2 percent, and Gateway was number four with 12.7 percent market share.

In a related story at crn.com, Dell expects its notebook sales this year to be 20% lower and has been reducing its notebook orders from Taiwan manufacturers.

The Bloomberg site noted that: "figures are for retail channel sales only and do not include direct sales, sales from Wal-Mart or warehouse clubs."

Your title for this article is highly misleading:

Apple Ranks Fifth in January Notebook Computer Sales

This is not correct, Apple ranks fifth in "retail store" Notebook Computer sales! Online and direct sales are not included. That's why Dell doesn't show up. This is a critical caveate. The way the story is repored is highly misleading and doesn't accurately represent Apple's true share of the laptop market.

Their share would probably be higher if they counted apple.com sales.

because of you count apple.com sales you should count dell.com sales as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if Dell pushes more notebooks in a quarter than Apple does in a year.

Very misleading title from the original poster, but par for the course for a macolyte site.

I wouldn't be surprised percentage wise if Dell had to replace more DOA notebooks per quarter than Apple.

Yeah, looks about right for retail sales. Apple would place higher if web sales were included as stats show Laptops tend to be configured and sold from the online Apple Store to a much greater degree than retail stores. Online sales of the other companies laptops are-surprisingly-less than you'd think. Not because of marketshare demand, but rather the ease of use of those e-stores, plain and simple.

Windows trolls seem to revel in this, but face it, Apple's star is on the rise, Microsoft's is not. Apple was one of the few computer hardware manufacturers to show dramatic growth last year. Also a fact. Considering it's mutiplatform nature, lack of viruses, and dependability, many IT departments are seriously considering moves to Apple.

Why else would the corporate leadership at Microsoft sweat Apple or almost carbon copy OSX? They're worried-for good reason too. To use an Apple explains why. Switchers become permanent adopters of Mac's offerings almost never looking back to the OS snake pit they've left. No denying that either.

Apple would probably place higher among some of the others on that retail list. But to think their numbers would even come close to touching Dell would require one to be quite clueless.

Really? Give me some examples. Oh you can't think of any? I'd love to use Macs at work, but its not going to happen ANY time soon. So sick of people repeating this rediculous idea that Apple can compete with M$ in the enterprise. MAYBE in a decade if they really focused on it. But personally I think they're better off sticking with the home.

Because they don't want Apple to keep stealing all the people switching at home. EVENTUALLY that would start to impact their business sales. I don't think they put a DVD player and flashy graphics in Vista to attract corporate buyers.

Who said Apple would be number one, I just said they would be higher on the list. You agree-so we're pat here.

Again, I didn't give a time line, but there are examples. Like this: http://www.infoworld.nl/idgns/bericht.phtml?id=002570DE00740E188825729C007A989F
if you're interested. Apple has lined up a pretty sweet line of enterprise worthy hardware which is easy to deploy, resistant to hacking and has better build quality than most machines out there. I stand by my statement. The resistance to this sort of news is usually from IT types whose very jobs depend on difficult to administer, bug & exploit ridden MS offerings. One logical hole in your retort is that MS, has ported the "eye candy" for it's "Ulimatesuperwonderfulbitchingiveusmoremoney Vista Business Edition" too.

Microsoft ripped off OSX, because they would like to blur the lines between the OSs, so that they can fool the great unwashed-yet again-into buying their sub-par bill of goods. Yet, you kind of said that too, with a little less sauce to your spin. Why anyone would buy a product with that sort of corporate philosophy backing it is beyond me. Finally, your spelling of rediculous, is-well-ridiculous.

Cool! Thurrott DOES post here! I mean, judge for yourself, but come on...compare for yourself an I think you'll agree:

The funny thing is, I myself wasn't paying any attention to this article until I noticed that it had a comment on it. I generally find ALL of these sales statistic "facts" to be meaningless. They ALL suffer from this kind of "but you're missing something" follow up that makes them meaningless.

I think it's funny there' so many comments harping on this particular one. Like there's a sales statistic out there that ISN'T flawed in some way. They're all fairly silly so why get so worked up over one of them?
