Google Desktop for the Mac Arrives

Google officially unveiled a Mac version of its Google Desktop application on Wednesday. Google Desktop is an application that searches the contents of your hard drive, Gmail account, and integrates with Web searches as well.

It is a Universal Binary, allowing it to run natively on PowerPC and Intel-based Macs, searches file contents and metadata, recognizes Spotlight plug-ins so it can search for the same information that Tiger's built-in search feature does, maintains a searchable Web history, and takes snapshots of text documents so they can be recovered if accidentally deleted.


Google Desktop for the Mac

Google Desktop for the Mac is free, and is currently available as a public beta. It can be downloaded at the Google Desktop Web site.

And is it able to scan the entire hard drive, and not a limited amount? Spotlight's lack of ability to search the entire hard drive makes me ache for the days of old Find File. EasyFind is too slow, and
File Buddy unexpectedly quits too often.

I haven't tried it yet on my Mac, but I use it on my PC at work and it's great. Hopefully, this is one benefit of the alliance between Apple and Google.

Hey gopher, no reason to "ache for the days of Find File." There is still a Find menu item in the Finder that works pretty much the way the classic Mac OS version worked. And you can search the whole computer or even servers.

(Not that it wouldn't be nice if Spotlight could do the same.)

I run 10.4.9 as you do and in the finder menu go to File/Find
or fro the finder use command F

This thing installs tons of files in bad places. Not to mention how often it phones home.

If Mac users accept this poor level of quality we'll soon discover the joys of applications like "Spybot Search and Destroy".

Well, your directions weren't very clear. First you said, "There is still a Find menu item in the Finder..," then you said, "...in the finder menu go to File/Find.." The first implies it's in the Finder Menu, and the second says both, "finder" and "File". It is in the File Menu when the Finder is active.

just a little page that shows how you can return the Command F or "Find" feature back to how it worked in pre-tiger and the classic MacOS. it will save you a ton of time.
