by , 5:10 PM EDT, May 24th, 2007
Apple released Security Update 2007-005 on Thursday. It is available via the Software Update in System Preferences of Mac OS X.
The PowerPC version is 16.7 MB while the Intel version is 30.2 MB.
This update is recommended for all users and improves security in these components: bind, CarbonCore, CoreGraphics, crontabs, fetchmail, file, iChat, mDNSResponder, PPP, ruby, screen, texinfo and VPN.
Additional details about each component patched are available at Apple.
After installation, there will be a double-boot sequence on both PPC and Intel.

I did go to Macfixit, and found this:
QuoteNote: post hoc is not propter hoc. You obviously have problems, but they weren't necessarily caused by the update.Macfixit wrote:
Early reader reports are mostly positive, but we do have a few reports of problems following installation of Security Update 2007-005. Keep in mind that these reports are anecdotal; that in some cases they are vague; and that, all appearances to the contrary, post hoc is not propter hoc. Still, they are also real (in some cases, clearly painfully so). So, these are not warnings against the update; they are possible evidence of issues that a small proportion of users may encounter.
Have you followed any of the suggestions and solutions on the Macfixit page?

I did not say 'probably' - I just pointed out that there was no guaranteed causal link between the two. q.v. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_hoc_ergo_propter_hoc
You said (I'm assuming it's you, because it's so hard to tell one guest from another) that the update is messing up a lot of Macs. Quite possibly, but how many is "a lot"? Is it dozens? hundreds? millions? Shrug - I have no idea - I'd suspect that with the lack of general outcry that it is probably a smaller number.
I'm not denying that you're having problems; however have you tried any of the remedies suggested in the Macfixit page? What are the symptoms of your email "not working"?

I am quite suspicious of this update. Within 2 days of having installed it on 2 of my LAN clients (a G3 B&W and a G4 Quicksilver), I lost the fiber channel on another OS X unit (another G4 QuickSilver), and I lost my G3's ability to boot from a CD.
Tiger security updates in 2007 have come in at nearly one a month, and it would not hurt to have a better idea of exactly what the heck is going on with this software.
To recover the fiber, I had to remove and reinsert the card, and reset its configuration from hub to client entirely, then the software prefs. Fine.
But then, this morning after the 2007-005 security update at the G4, and after I "repaired permissions," it was not booting dependably off its OS 9.2.2 volume, and I eventually took apart the whole unit. That's off with the graphics card at the AGP slot, off with the GigaNIC card, off with the ATTO SCSI accelerator card, and I removed also 3 RAM modules, the PRAM battery, every cable to the board, and the ATA to the SuperDrive, as well as the power cables to all internal hardware. I then zapped the cuda switch and put everything back together. Now the unit works fine. Its Gigabit card is serving our databases normally. It boots OS 9.2.2 and Tiger 10.4.9 from their respective volumes on separate Seagate Cheetah. Life is good, at least until the next security update from Apple.

security 005 completely hosed the first machine I installed it on (G4 Quicksilver / PPC). It froze before it finished installing so when I rebooted, surprise! I couldn't login. I inspected the OS in single user mode, tried manually starting each service and got very perculiar authentication errors hinting that ssh was completely f***ed. I finally gave up and restored the OS from CD.
On the 2nd machine, a newer Imac G5, the machine would not shutdown after installing the update (spinning wheel on the blue screen). However, after forcing a reboot things appear to be working OK.
I'm not updating my macbook until they release another update!
