Sibelius 5 Adds Full VST/AU Support, More

by , 8:25 AM EDT, June 12th, 2007

Sibelius Software announced Sibelius 5 on Tuesday. The new version of the music notation application added full support for VST and Audio Units plug-ins along with Ideas Hub - a feature that lets users capture, tag, and find musical ideas.

The update also bundles Sibelius Sounds Essentials with 2GB of sounds, SoundWorld which lets Sibelius select the best sound for any device, and Panorama for easier score composition and editing.

Sibelius 5 is a Universal Binary application, allowing it to run natively on PowerPC and Intel-based Macs. It requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

Sibelius 5 is available for pre-order now, and should ship the last week of June. It is priced at US$599.

Subject: What took them so long?

Finally, one of the most favourite apps for musicians, composers, arrangers and others in music industry is here in UB! We've been waiting and waiting and waiting... Finale came with UB a long, long time ago and they were beginning to gain ground even in areas where Sibelius was clearly becoming a dominant tool.

While Sibelius 4 had its engraving quirks, it was rapidly becoming a tool of choice for independent musicians. Unlike Finale, the 800-pound gorilla of music engraving (Quark?), Sibelius has always been more intuitive and quicker to learn (InDesign?). Having done several big scores in both, I can confirm that my subjective opinion is in line with what others have already said.

The only remaining thing to come over to UB is now... MS Office. Once that's done, we're done with the transition. Sweet.
