Sony Mimics the Apple Genius Bar

by , 4:15 PM EDT, June 22nd, 2007

Sony appears to be set to mimic the Apple Genius Bar in its 55 Sony Style stores, according to IfoAppleStore.

The Sony version is called Backstage, and the locations will include, "computer-only services that include one-on-one training sessions, system optimization, hardware and software diagnostics, new software installation and data migration," according to the report.

A photo of one of the backstage locations was included, however the counter is not nearly as large as those found in the Apple retail stores.

Previously, the New York Times took Sony to task for its inattention to customers by focusing instead on branding in its Sony Style stores. Sony might be starting to realize what Apple has achieved with the Genius Bar.

Subject: Genius Bar? Sony needs much, much more

Okay, I have been a MAC person for over 20 years. However my wife is a Windows user who prefers the Sony machines. When we visit our local mall be it Mellenia in Orlando or South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, there is a glaring difference in the service between the two brand stores in both locations. No, it is not the Genius Bar though that might help for Sony. What has struck us both is the aluffness of the Sony staff vrs the service offered by Apple associates. Sony needs more than just a Genius Bar to match the Apple Store experience. Sony offers good windows products but very poor in-store service.
