Mac OS X 10.4.10 Audio Problem Surfaces
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Audio Problem Surfaces
by , 1:50 PM EDT, June 26th, 2007
One of the side effects of upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.10 has been a persistent, intermittent audio "pop." It doesn't happen on all systems, but for those who find it annoying, MacFixIt had some suggestions on Monday.
One work around is somewhat technical and involves reverting to a Mac OS X 10.4.9 kernel extension. For those who don't want to do that, it's been found that keeping an audio process going, but turning the volume down, prevents what appears to be a possible power saving feature.
The click is definitely annoying, and this reporter is observing it on a MacBook Pro, C2D. Another strategy may be to just wait for an update from Apple. It's probably driving a lot of Apple people crazy too.

Make that two from the TMO staff so far that are experiencing the speaker popping problem. The issue started for me immediately after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.10, and I experience it from my MacBook Pro's built-in speakers as well as external monitors. Like John, my MacBook Pro is a Core 2 Duo.

I have a first generation MacBook and not only am I experiencing the "snap crackle pop" audio noise but I'm also having a problem mounting an Other World Computing Mercury Elite external USB Hard Drive. Apple's forums are filled with similar stories. I spent an hour in the phone with AppleCare and they were also at a loss for ideas. Hopefully an update to the update will be forthcoming...

My Mini has the same problem. It's driving me and my office workers a bit loopy. I did the "mute" trick, which didn't work.
Can't wait for 10.4.11!
I think what Apple has been doing is patching these issues with security patches. So I wouldn't be surprised if they don't soon issue a security patch that fixes this and other various issues. Since 10.4.10 was released for the iPhone I wouldn't expect to see any more OS 10.4.x versions between now and Leopard release in October.

After sabotaging 10.4.9 to get us to run to Leopard and then delaying 10.5, we're stuck. This is the same thing they did with 10.3.9, but 10.4 was right around the corner. I was told by several Apple Reps that this is part of their "marketing plan".
I had to reload from a previous backup of my 7th install of 10.4.9, better, but worse than 10.4.5, to get my machine to work at all. 10.4.10 had kernel panics more than I have ever seen, the audio problem, the "Beach Ball of Death" and "Not Responding" for every application that I run. Adobe apps more so. Just to name a few problems that arose with 10.4.10.
I hope Apple gets busted on this one. This "marketing plan" is crap.

I am having this problem too, but I didn't realize it might be related to the update until I saw this article. I'd only noticed it while plugged into my Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers. I assumed the speakers were doing something funky, that maybe it was just the sub clicking on or off while idle (even though I had never heard it do that before.) Guess not!

I too am having glitches with the 10.4.10 update. I have a MBP core duo 2 and a line 6 toneport through USB. Every 2 mins or so the sound will cut out, the meters will drop on the TP and the sound will go dead. I've tried running an audio process on mute with no avail, as well as switching resolutions... etc. Hopeing 10.4.11 will fix this as I really dont wan to start hacking my kernel.
Fortunately never had sound problems... However lost my all USB mass storage connectivity since 10.4.10. Well, sadly, 10.4.11, although allegedly addressing this issue as well, hasn't fixed it at all. Mem. sticks, ext. drives, USB hub, internal cam, all are in crapper. Thanx for another 100mb (on my machine) update, Apple!
So i took the plunge to 10.4.11, this is definitely a Quicktime issue related as far as im cpncerned. I updated quicktime on my macs before i updated the OS, both my macs were on 10.4.9 when the clicks started, it was the update to QT 7.3 which threw my machines. Updating to 10.4.11 has done nothing.
A minor but very irritating problem.
