FileMaker Launches FileMaker Pro 9
by , 9:10 AM EDT, July 10th, 2007
FileMaker announced the immediate availability of FileMaker Pro 9 on Tuesday. The new version of the database application added a new Quick Start screen, conditional formatting that highlights data based on user-created parameters, improved SQL support, link emailing so other users can access your databases, and more.
Along with FileMaker Pro 9, the company also released FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced, FileMaker Server 9, and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced.
FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced improved the database Design Report and File maintenance tools, updated the script debugger and data viewer, and added a PHP site assistant link that works in conjunction with the PHP features in FileMaker Server 9.
FileMaker Server 9 added a PHP site assistant that allows non-programmers to create PHP-driven Web sites for FileMaker Pro databases, a redesigned interface, a Web-based server console, an improved installer, shared live data access from external SQL sources, and more.
FileMaker Pro 9 is priced at US$299, and upgrades from FileMaker Pro 7, 8, and 8.5 cost $179. FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced costs $499, and upgrades from FileMaker Developer 7, FileMaker Pro Advanced 8 and 8.5 Advanced are $299.
FileMaker Server 9 is priced at $999, and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced costs $$2,499. Upgrades from FileMaker Server 7 and 8 are $599. Upgrades from FileMaker Server 7 Advanced and 8 Advanced are $1,499.

From the lack of specifics on the list, it does look like these are minor upgrades. But the truth is, the External SQL Source alone is a huge improvement. SQL table can now appear in FileMaker's relationships graph, so your users can have a live connection to a SQL table. Now more import/update hacks via ODBC.
ScriptMaker is no longer a modal dialog box, so you can have multiple edit script windows open at one time, more than one developer can script at the same time, and the door is now open for direct typing of scripts (although that's *not* in this release).
Server can run scripts, without a robot machine. The Java Web Start console gives you more control over the server, including knowing what authentication are used to acccess files.
Maybe on the surface this stuff looks minor, but I've been working with the beta for months, and I'm more productive with less effort. That's worth the upgrade to me, and to my clients.
