HDHomeRun Brings Networked HD TV to the Mac

by , 9:20 AM EDT, July 24th, 2007

Elgato Systems announced the immediate availability of a Mac-compatible version of the HDHomeRun networked digital TV tuner on Tuesday. The tuner uses Elgato's EyeTV software to allow Macs on a local network to show free SD and HDTV programming.

The HDHomeRun supports over-the-air digital TV, and unencrypted (Clear QAM) digital cable channels. It includes EyeTV 2 software for two Macs, cables, and an AC power adapter.

The HDHomeRun for the Mac is priced at US$199.95, and is available at the Elgato Web site.

I wish it allowed you to hook it up to your TV as well.

Maybe you missed the point or didn't read the article. This is an HDTV tuner for Macs--it allows Macs to show (and record) over-the-air and Clear QAM digital cable signals. You don't need a tuner for your TV. That's done either by the TV or cable set top box.

Elgato has several other products that connect Macs to TV, including HDTV. The difference is that the HDHomeRun works on an Ethernet network and supports multiple Macs, while the other tuners connect via FireWire or USB 2 and support only one Mac. The HDHomeRun has two tuners, so two Macs can watch and record different programs.
