Apple CEO Jabs HD Camera Makers
by , 8:45 AM EDT, August 14th, 2007
Apple CEO Steve Jobs doesn't think that high-definition camcorders are producing the level of quality they should for personal computers. HD camcorders, he claims, don't include the sensors to record full high definition, and as a result output sub-HD quality to computers -- and he took advantage of last week's iMac launch to point that out, according to CNN Money.
Mr. Jobs's comments may have been an attempt to put some pressure on camcorder makers to ramp up the quality of their products. Even though most consumers won't be able to tell that their home movies aren't full HD quality, some will, and they may look to Apple for an explanation.
By orchestrating a preemptive strike against camcorder manufacturers, Mr. Jobs may also be laying the groundwork to insulate his company from potential complaints that iMovie does not produce movies with the quality customers expect.
This is not the first time Mr. Jobs has used his clout to pressure media industries. Earlier this year, he wrote an open letter to the recording industry to abandon copy protection in music downloads.
In that letter, he claimed that DRM, or digital rights management, is ineffective and has been hampering the growth of legitimate music download services like the iTunes Store. Later, EMI Group announced that it was removing copy protection from its music collection, and would offer those tracks through Apple's online music service.
Regardless of his motives, it seems clear that Mr. Jobs has enough power to catch the attention of media and entertainment companies. How long he can maintain some level of influence over these companies, however, remains to be seen.

Tue Aug 14, 2007 11:06 am Subject: what about ichatAV???
1st: it doesn't handle full screen 1:1 video chats right... since the ichatAV isight is 4:3, it should be displayed in 4:3 in full screen, not fake 16:9 widescreen which looks distorted!
2nd: the new built in isights have 1280x1024 resolution instead of the old 640x480... why is ichatAV and photobooth or QT not able to take advantage of that resolution??? it still displays 640x480 even though 1280x1024 is possible???
720p resolution 1280x720 is possible but no app in osX is taking advantage of the upped resolution... sad...
the "year of HD" passed us and not much happened back then... now we have the tools for basic video stuff in HD and apple is not acting accordingly...
if it's a bandwidth thing, why not make it optional with QT settings in system preferences for advanced users that have enough upload bandwidth... i have 1mbit upload which is more than enough for 1:1 HD video chat... why not give it to us small stupid users???
i don't get it....
i'm not bashing ichatAV, i love it...
i'm bashing apple for not implementing easy improvements to ichatAV to take advantage of HD camcorders and the new isight resolution...
the full screen 16:9 bug was bugging me for a long time... for perfectionists like apple mistakes like that shouldn't happen....
the problem with displaying the higher res image for ichat av is that that image would have to be transferred across the internet inorder to arrive on your screen. Sure, you can have your higher res ichat video conferences.... but at a quarter of the framerate, hows that?
The internet services and speeds available to consumers needs to step up first before we can start raising the res on iChat. Having the iSights already capable of that seems less like Apple is lagging behind on getting this "feature" to you, and more like it is actually just being held back by internet technology these days.
the people i ichatAV with have "stepped up" their broadband connection for quite some time!
most people in europe i do ichatAV with have 16Mbit down, 1Mbit upload... with 1Mbit upload 1280x720 ichatAV can deliver very good 1:1 and acceptable 1:2-1:3 mulitchat!
and VDSL in germany is 25/5Mbit, or 50/10Mbit... most german big cities offer VDSL now, and in then next 12 months cities over 100k households will get upgraded gradually to VDSL... @ companies speed should not be an issue... only the US still has a problem with bandwidth @ residential homes since large areas have a max. DSL offering of 1.5/.256Mbit. only where infrastructure was upgraded to fibre to the curb much faster offerings are available. looks like the north american market completly ingnored ADSL 2+ and it's 16-20Mbit download and 1-2Mbit upload.... the old regular ADSL standard is capable of 6/1Mbit, which would solve most people immediate needs, but ISPs in the US seem to be unwilling to upgrade their customers... major bummer...
i have tested h.264 live video transmission with the app "wirecast" @ 15fps, 1280x720 @ 400-600 kbit/sec picture was very good. @ 700-800kbit/sec 15fps 1280x720 is killer crisp, like HD should be...
i would not post stuff like this if i had no idea what i was talking about...
