Apple Warns of Pending Boot Camp Beta Expiration

Apple Warns of Pending Boot Camp Beta Expiration

by , 12:20 PM EDT, October 1st, 2007

Apple is offering Boot Camp beta 1.4 users a reminder that the software that lets them boot their Mac with Windows instead of Mac OS X is due to expire. The license to use the beta software is set to expire when Mac OS X 10.5, or Leopard, ships some time in October.

Boot Camp beta 1.2 expired on September 30, so users that didn't upgrade to version 1.4 are already past their license expiration date. The company hasn't stated whether or not the version 1.4 beta will stop working once Leopard ships, or if users will simply be outside of the license agreement if they continue to use Boot Camp if they don't upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5.

Apple's Boot Camp warning is available at the company's Support Web site.

Wait and see, Apple's going to get sued because Boot Camp will expire and customers were notified BEFORE it happened. The complaint will be it should not have expired at all.

Whew, good thing I'm waiting 'til 10.5 to do the whole Boot Camp thing. I doubt Apple will suddenly shut off Boot Camp for all the 10.4 users, though. There's been a lot of Boot Camp downloads, I bet, and a good chunk of users are probably using it for "mission-critical" work despite its beta status.

That's outrageous! I'm going to start a class action lawsuit!

There us a big difference between beta software expiring, as even expects will happen, and Apple targeting modified iPhones to be disabled in an iPhone update. At the very least, Apple is not ripping $600 from people's hands in this instance.

Just when and how did Apple "rip $600 from people's hands"? The only people adversely affected were those who modified their iPhones. If they were using the iPhone as they bought it, it's unlikely that they would have had problems. (Apparently, a few did and Apple is replacing their iPhones.)

I wish Apple was selling an upgrade to Boot Camp alone. We have one Pro tower that is only being used as a Windows machine right now, and will be for a while as it looks. I have no need for Leopard - just Boot Camp. I wonder how common this is. Probably not very much, but still, a $39 (or so) Boot Camp upgrade would be nice. What will end up happening is that I'll put Leopard on my machine where I need the OS but not Boot Camp, but I'll also put it on the Windows machine where I need Boot Camp but not the OS. Yeah, it violates the license agreement, but that's a situation where I'd have a hard time conjuring up many moral reservations.

Aaargh, ye scurvey dogs. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

Same here. It would just be less complicated to pay for one piece of software rather than upgrading the OS.

imho at least, BB
