Smith Micro Launches Stuffit Deluxe 12
by , 9:20 AM EDT, October 10th, 2007
Smith Micro Software announced the immediate availability of StuffIt Deluxe 12 on Wednesday. The new version of the file compression application sports a new engine that Smith Micro claims is more efficient at reducing the size of MP3 files, high quality images, and office suite documents.
StuffIt Deluxe 12 can compress MP3 files without reducing audio quality; compresses PDF, TIFF, PGN, GIF and BMP without degrading image quality; includes a 240bit image compressor; can re-compress Zip archives; and can display thumbnails of archived images. It also compresses embedded image and audio clips in Pages, Keynote, and Numbers documents.
StuffIt Deluxe 12 is priced at US$79.99. Upgrades from any version of StuffIt Deluxe or StuffIt Standard cost $29.99 through April 30, 2008.

What is the point of this software?
The archive function built into Mac OS X is "good enough".
Is it the best? No, but who cares?
Stuffit was a great product in its day. Today, there is no need for it.
At NewEgg, for $75, I can get a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 250GB 3.5" External Hard Drive.
Guess I don't need Stuffit.
For just $79, you can save as much as 12MB of space on your hard drive!!! .
They are way of the mark. At the risk of sounding elitist... they don't even know their audience. Their website looks like a Windows advertisement. Lots of flashy "Buy this product" stuff in your face. It reminds me of the MS iPod parody video (google it).
Okay, viewing thumbs of compressed archives is a pretty nice feature, but it isn't worth $79/seat. Stuffit used to be one of those utilities you needed (especially when disk space was expensive and broadband was not common). Allume/SmithMicro are just crazy nowadays.
What's up with all the haters? If you don't find their products compelling, then don't buy it.
People complain that there's not enough choice in the Mac software catalog. Well here's another choice. Don't like it? Don't buy it. But don't call for the demise of the product, what's the upside?
As far as I know, this product works as advertised. In fact no one is criticizing the quality of the product, just the functionality itself (and the cheesy web site). That's like saying, "I've got a car, why in the world would I need a bike? To take me places I can already go? And that bike salesman has a really lousy tie!"
Lighten up.
I'll tell you what's up with the haters and why some of us have no choice but to by this crap that's updated EVERY YEAR and always claims to be better than the last buggy version: There are literally millions of old stuffit files out there; many people haven't got the slightest clue that OS X has a built in archive; many scripts that were written before OS X's BOM archive are looking for Stuffit files (and NOT sitx thanks); service bureaux have to be able to deal with any file that walks in the door and unfortunately, many of these files are Stuffit files because lots of people don't know any better and keep updating, which forces everyone who has to deal with their files to update; if you want to use all the features in OS X, such the Finder option to alwyas display disk info, is broken in Stuffit so files don't show up, so you have to "upgrade" to get it to work.

turns to crap. Their latest acquisition was Aladdin, markers of Stuffit Deluxe, that is now Allume and they took out all the real reasons to buy Stuffit. All the features and options that made it possible to drag and drop a file on an app that you could make that would Stuff or Zip your file(s), upload to a server you designated in the creation of the app, create an eMail that had text that you preset (Send to; Subject; Body Text with variable data links to the file) and would create the link path from the file name and final location, include it in the eMail and you just click send. They now say that you can do this with Automator. Nope. You can't. No even close.
So I agree why bother. Plus for the longest time the new .sitx format corrupted more than it compressed. And it's keyboard control features are all now linked to the .sitx format. No selecting your format or features anymore as we could in the Aladdin versions.
If I am wrong and they brought back features and fixed things, I will update in a second.
Have to completely agree with farmerbob, I had a number of Express PE automations setup. I was a bit brassed off when they wouldn't work in Stuffit 12, but when I tried the suggestion to use Apple Automator, it became apparent that that application simply does NOT in away way replace the built in system in earlier versions.
I'm really p*ssed off now, I have to use the latest version as my customers have updated and I can't open there files with the earlier version. You don't seem to be able to run both versions side by side, even though they install in different folders.
Utter, utter rubbish IMHO

Sometimes clients send me Stuffit files, and I refuse to open them. If they don't like it, they can get another vendor.

Man, that's real intelligent and a hell of a business plan. You'll go far I'm sure!

That's an aggresive stance to take in a competitive market. Is your name Bill Gates by any chance?
BTW I agree with you, who needs V12? I wouldn't mind but my experience tells me that sometimes to sucessfully open V8 files you need V8 and so on, and you can't run multiple versions on one MAC...or can you?.
