13 Year Old Jailbreaks iPod touch

by , 10:50 AM EDT, October 15th, 2007

A 13 year old that goes by the handle AriX has managed to produce a simple to use jailbreak method for the iPod touch called iJailBreak. AriX's hack allows iPod touch users to install third-party applications on their touch interface iPod, and does not require any special skills to use.

iJailBreak is, at least for now, limited to Intel-based Macs running Mac OS X 10.4 or higher. At version 0.2.1, it is still in the early stages of development.

Once installed, iPod touch users can install additional applications to their portable media player, much like iPhone users were doing prior to the iPhone 1.1.1 software update. Even though it is possible to install additional apps on the iPod touch, however, Apple does not support the process.

iJailBreak is free, and available for download at the Google Code Web site.

How stupid can you get? The next time Apple offers an up grade to the iPod software there is a good chance that hacked iPods will become bricks.

It is great to see the hacks coming out. I agree it is stupid to make them public so soon. Keep them on the DL, unless you need the publicity.

Ummm... This guy did not actually develop the jailbreak, he just made a simple one-step packaged solution to jailbreaking the ipod touch. Real credit goes to Niacin and dre who did the work and released their tiff exploit affecting both the ipod touch and the iphone. So, this is not a hack (as the article states), merely a packaged solution.

you fool theres no need to upgrade the software for your ipod stop quoting articles and get a brain.

Subject: Not in this case

This hack doesn't involve any OS or bootloader patches. If your phone gets screwed up in any way just hit reset and it will be good as new. (Of course you'd have to hack it all over again).

no need to upgrade software - ahh - a ibm fud who uses a black screen with green characters

...and someone will hack THAT update as well...

Apple needs to realize that people want flexibility with their iPods, and will do whatever is necessary to GET that flexibility. MP3's are much more flexible than AAC files and so on...

Subject: Not so stupid

It seems amazing that a 13-year-old has created this hack. Maybe Apple should begin allowing this 3rd party software on their iTouch and iPhone since users are obviously demanding it...

It's pretty awesome to be able to use other programs on my touch. From what it looks like, un-bricking an ipod is worlds easier than unbricking an iphone. Press a few buttons on the touch, and Itunes restores it back to pre-jailbreak condition and you're all set. In the instructions for this crack, there are instructions on how to do it if it bricks while jailbreaking it.

Close Name:Guest
Subject: Then it's not a "brick"

You can't say something was a "brick" if you are able to restore it. When something is a brick, it means it is dead and cannot be restored without resorting to a hardware fix. If you can restore something with a few button presses then by definition it wasn't a brick.

Don't go diluting the language!

Apple just wants MONEY, why do you have to jailbreak it to use other programs? I like my PC and the like because they let you use free programs and just say they can't be responsible for what it did to your system.

Apple= PC minus OSX and apple support (PC support is comparable if you want it)

Subject: Apple Corp

Actually PC's are faster and cheaper but made out of the same hardware. They are much faster on games (4x or so) and run down to almost equal on photoshop and sometimes after effects.

Subject: Not so stupid as you would think

Evidently the reader who said that this was stupid because the next update will brick the phone hasn't heard that the iPhone elite have discovered how to "Unbrick" the iphone and Unlock it yet again, while maintaining all the update functionality. It is an arms race.

Apple needs to give up the control game, they will not win. They want to upsell you their own stuff not let you use 3rd party stuff.

Why do you want to just be content with what the big boss (apple) tells you to do. You paid $500 for the damn thing, and you should be allowed to do whatever you please with it.

not stupid at all, u r the one whos so narrow minded. as soon as apple release a patch there will be another crack. itll be a never ending story u wait n see.

You people signed contracts, if you don't like the restrictions don't buy the phone. I hope all of your phones are bricked.

BS you signed a contract with apple and AT&T. All you are doing is making it worse for the rest of us. Every cell company has restictions on use, same with the internet DRM songs DVD's airline travel, your drivers license, etc... If you don't like the restrictions don't sign the contract or buy the phone. These restrictions allow the company to recoupe the development cost and pay the investors. If idiots like you keep cracking code and maling profits short you will only have piss poor service with cheap phones.

AT&T's cellular network... Oh, wait! These aren't cell phones... now what, Steve?

who would be crazy enough to get apple updates after using the hack? that's just absurd. just wait for the next hack lol

it costs more to get 'specialized hardware' than to hack it to handle more

Subject: Apple Shills

You all are a bunch of idiots... why use an Apple anything? The iPhone is cool... not worth the money, or the wait--and then they dropped the price $200 and in order to make it up to you idiots, they will give the early adopters a $100 Apple Store credit--HAHAHAHHAHAHA!! And you take it with a smile.

Subject: I hate Apple

I hate Macs, iPods, everything made by apple. They don't allow enough flexibility! I wanna be free! I want to share my MP3s with friends if i want to. They're just money hungry. Well, I can't afford their junk anyways... It's nice, but not my style.

So when were you unable to play an MP3 on your iPod?

So you don't update the ipod software, every iPhone user with a Jailbroken iPhone doesn't, and they live with it.
