Apple Sells 7M Macs in FY2007

Apple may have dropped "Computer" from its name, but you wouldn't be able to tell based on Mac sales. The Cupertino-based company managed to sell a record seven million Macintosh computers in fiscal 2007, up some 30 percent compared to last year.
The company also reported that it shipped over two million Macs shipped during the September quarter, breaking previous quarterly records.
"We're extremely pleased to have shipped 2.16 million Macs, representing 34 percent growth over the year-ago quarter," said CFO Peter Oppenheimer. "On a worldwide basis, Apple's growth rate was over two times IDC's most recently-published market growth rate for the September quarter."
The redesigned glossy display iMac played a big role in Mac sales for the September quarter, as did the MacBook and MacBook Pro. Mr. Oppenheimer commented "Customers responded very favorably to the new iMacs we announced in August, driving 31 percent year-over-year growth in desktop systems."
Portable sales were up 37 percent year-over-year in the September quarter, and accounted for 62 percent of the Macs sold. Computer sales in the education channel were up, too, showing a 36 percent year-over-year increase in higher education.
"We exited the September quarter with great momentum," Mr. Oppenheimer said. "Mac shipments exceeded our previous quarterly record by 400,000 systems and we're very excited about the arrival of leopard later this week."
