Fastest Vista Laptop? It's a Mac
Fastest Vista Laptop? It's a Mac
by , 9:20 AM EDT, November 1st, 2007
PCWorld put a wide range of laptops through the wringer in 2007, and found the model that ran Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system the fastest was Apple's MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro beat out offerings from Dell, Toshiba, and Alienware.
PCWorld's The Most Notable Notebooks of 2007 report said "The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year is a Mac. Try that again: The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac."
Apple's pro-level laptop beat out the Gateway E-265M by only one point with an overall score of 88 in PCWorld's WorldBench tests. The reports added "The MacBook's score is far more impressive simply because Apple couldn't care less whether you run Windows."
The bottom line: It looks like the best platform for running Mac OS X and Windows is a Mac.

Observer Comments
Do read at least the summaries of the other bits of the article. Some are hilarious, like the heaviest, the Acer Aspire 9810-6829, about which the author wrote:
"Acer's $2999 Aspire 9810-6829 is so huge that starting it up causes nuclear power plants to go offline. Lifting it off a table--if you can--causes tides to rise in nearby harbors. And opening the lid slows global warming by blocking out the sun."
This beastie weighs 17.3 lbs, more than 19 lbs with the power adapter. That's more than the original Mac Portable, which was hardly a "laptop." It would be like having two normal-size cats sitting on your lap--and refusing to move. It's almost the weight of THREE 17-inch MacBook Pros. You could stack up a 17-inch MacBook Pro, a 15.4 inch MacBook Pro, and a MacBook and still not quite make it. Imagine carrying a 17-inch Intel iMac slung over your shoulder: it weighs 15.4 lbs, plus 2.3 lbs for the keyboard and mouse, total 17.7 lbs. (OK, add a bit for the power cord.) That is less than this behemoth with the power adapter.

Interesting news - and not unexpected, I might say.
One nit: the colloquialism is actually "through the wringer", which refers back to those old washing machines that were equipped with a wringer instead of a spin cycle.
