Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.4.11 with Security Fixes, Safari 3
by , 7:45 AM EST, November 15th, 2007
Apple released Mac OS X 10.4.11 on Wednesday to fix a long list of Tiger related issues. The update addresses several potential security threats and includes Safari 3.
The Mac OS X 10.4.11 update also corrected a problem when copying files from Mac OS 9 AFP sharepoints, improved AFP over Bonjour support, improved third-party wireless WAN device support, and updated Daylight Saving Time information for Indiana, Australia, New Zealand.
Camera Raw image support was added for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50, Leica V-Lux 1, Olympus E-400, Olympus EVOLT E410, Olympus EVOLT E510, and Canon EOS 40D cameras. Compatibility was improved when using OpenType fonts in QuarkXPress, and reliability when using VMware Fusion was improved, too.
A complete list of what's included with the update, along with downloadable installers, is available at the Apple Support Web site. Versions of the 10.4.11 update are available for Intel and PowerPC-based Macs. The update is free and available through Apple's Software Update application.

I've just updated to 10.4.11 and regretfully Safari will no longer allow viewing PDFs with Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0.9. I previously reported slowness, crashes, and freezes, which were a result of the plug-in incompatibility, or so it appears. I had forgotten that Acrobat Professional set up the plug-in. I'm not one to go out and get plug-ins, so it wasn't until pouring over Apple Discussion posts that I considered the Acrobat as the potential problem.
While I could view the PDFs with Safari 3.0.4 and Acrobat, returning to a previous page or a new web site caused the scroll bar to disappear and then the Safari would crash. I've unchecked the Adobe preference for Acrobat Professional 7.0.9 viewing of PDFs for internet and the problem has gone away. Unfortunately, viewing PDFs within Safari is quite different now. I can right click my mouse and choose "view with Preview."
From other posts on Apple Discussions, it appears that many plug-ins are no longer compatible with Safari 3.0.4. I guess all we can do is wait for updates on the third party plug-ins.
Thu Nov 15, 2007 11:30 am Subject: No Problems Here
I updated my PowerBook (PB G4 1.25Ghz 1Gb RAM) last night. No issues, no problems, nothing. Honestly I haven't noticed any difference before and after in anything. Safari is exactly the same. The Finder runs the same. The whole system is just the same; no speed change, no crashes, no spinning beachballs. If I hadn't spent half an hour updating rather than doing productive/fun stuff I wouldn't know that I'd done anything. I even went to About This Mac just to double check that it had in fact installed the upgrade.
No problems so far. Tonight I'll do the G4 PM and older iBook.

Try this: Under the Acrobat Pro help menu chose "Detect and Repair."

Detect and Repair did not work. Same problems. Acrobat Professional 7.0.9 crashes Safari every time. It worked flawlessly in the previous Safari. Unfortunately, users who want to view PDFs within Safari 3.0.4 with Acrobat must upgrade to Acrobat 8. What a shame. These things are so frustrating.
I have just upgrading to the new Mac OS X 10.4.11 from OS X 10.4.10 and in the process acquired Safari 3 which is not working at all on my MacBook Pro. The previous version of Safari was working just fine. Infact I resisted the Beta upgrade because it brought the same problems. Can anyone help out on this?
I too have probs with Safari 3 on 10.4.11. does most basic things fine but wont upload photos to ebay or navigate through apple discussion forum pages. The solution - install netscape navigator 9. works fine and looks quite like safari, but with a few annoying prompts. I'll stick with that until S3 is sorted.
