Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.5.1, Fixes File Moving Issue
by , 1:50 PM EST, November 15th, 2007
Apple released Mac OS X 10.5.1 Thursday afternoon, nearly three weeks after the Leopard launch. Apple states the update includes "general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac," which also includes a fix for a major problem that could result in lost data when moving a document from one hard drive to another.
The update corrects an issue with saved passwords for wireless networks, lets password-protected AirPort Disk accounts display in the Finder's Shared sidebar, improves the reliability of Back to My Mac-enabled computers appearing in the Finder's sidebar, and improves support for D-Link NAT gateways. It also restored the progress bar in Disk Utility, corrected a reliability problem with email alerts in iCal being delivered, and fixed several bugs in Mail.
The Firewall Block All option was renamed Allow Only essential services, and the update also fixed a code signing issue with third-party applications.
The update also corrects drive formatting issue some Time Machine users have been experiencing, and fixes a problem where restored files were appearing in the backup hierarchy instead of the folders where they belong.
Additional information about the updater along with a complete list of updated features and fixed issues is available Apple's Web site.
Mac OS X 10.5.1 is available through Apple's Software Update application, or as a downloadable installer from the Apple Support Web site.
Observer Comments
I just upgraded my 1.83 MacBook and my 20" 2.0G5 iMac to 10.5.1.
The MacBook upgrade went perfectly.
My iMac is now fubar. The Finder won't launch properly, and is stuck in a loop of relaunching itself repeatedly. If I try to launch another app (such as Safari) it quits after a minute since the Finder is going around and around. Yeeesh. I'm stuck. It looks like I'll be visiting the message boards for a while to find a fix...

This is the first report I have heard of a 10.5.1 install going wrong, but then I haven't trolled looking for one. Have you tried booting into safe mode, logging in and then restarting as normal? This seems to be a common fix for Finder related issues in 10.4 and 10.5, one which I have implemented with great success many times.
My g4 power book bit the dust on this update too. After it installed, rebooted, it went t garble land, had some error. Rebooted and it seemed the update was fine. Now few days later, rebooted spaces wont turn on, and my dock wont load. Checked error reporting logs, shows dock keeps trying to launch but crash each time. Trying safe mode now, but tried disk verify, etc, no worky.

I had the very same issue and ended up doing a clean install of Tiger to resolve this, has anyone got a fix for this yet?
I upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5 then did all the updates to my MacBook. Every thing went well and since then all has been well till last week I discovered that I could not see the hard disk on the desktop and that finder was playing up. I have looked for solutions on the internet but non is good enough to resolve this problem. I am abroad on holiday so I cannot reinstall but have to wait till I get back to London unless someone has a quick solution that resolves finder launching issues. Applications that are not in the dock have to be launched through spot light and saving any thing in any application is out of the question.
