Boot Camp Beta and Tiger 10.4.11 a Disaster for Some

Boot Camp Beta and Tiger 10.4.11 a Disaster for Some

by , 1:05 PM EST, November 27th, 2007

A few users at Apple's discussion forum are experiencing a severe problem with the Beta of Boot Camp installed under Tiger, then updating to 10.4.11. The result is that the Mac cannot boot and the only remedy is to extract the user data in FireWire Target Mode, reformat and reinstall the OS.

The thread of the discussion has some helpful suggestions by contributors, but the most important thing is to back up all user data before attempting the 10.4.11 update for those who have a Boot Camp partition. For those who may need to reformat and reinstall, simply booting from a CD doesn't seem to work. A second Mac is helpful along with FireWire Target Disk Mode to extract the user data before starting that process.

One customer who had the problem took his Mac to a local Genius Bar and reported that this may be a known issue. A search of the Apple Knowledge Base, however, did not return any relevant documents.

Subject: wouldn't that be consistent...

... with the fact that the beta was to have expired with the release of Leopard?

Subject: Not really

The Boot Camp setup assistant expired, not users' Windows partitions.

If you do a Tiger upgrade after the expiration of the BootCamp beta I would expect the same. Moral of the story if you do not want to upgrade to Leopard and need BootCamp don't do a Tiger upgrade either.

"I had a similar problem in that the updater ran then told me there was a problem and to run the updater again. I restarted and got a kernal panic. Fortunately, I had 10.5 installed on another hard drive.

I simply started up from 10.5 and re-ran the 10.4.11 Combo Update from within 10.5. The updater allowed me to select the 10.4.10 HD for upgrade, which ran smoothly.

I re-started from the newly updated 10.4.11 and everything is fine now.

I took a chance and it worked for me, I can't guarantee it will work for anyone else. Please proceed with caution."

I actually sent an email to Mike at xlr8yourmac.com on 15th November 2007 explaining what happened on my first update and the procedure I used that resolved my problem -- I think Mike's been busy as he has not posted any reports of this problem.

As an aside, this doesn't just affect Intel Macs.

"...With the introduction of Leopard, the Boot Camp Beta program has ended. The Boot Camp Beta software will expire on December 31, and Apple won't offer further updates of Boot Camp Beta for Mac OS X Tiger."
