BBC Adds Mac Support to iPlayer

BBC Adds Mac Support to iPlayer

by , 10:15 AM EST, December 13th, 2007

The BBC's online iPlayer service opened its doors to the Mac on Thursday. While the beta of the streaming TV service has been extended beyond just Windows users, the ability to download shows is still missing for anyone outside of the Microsoft camp.

iPlayer lets U.K. residents stream BBC shows that have aired over the last seven days to Mac, Windows, and Linux computers. The BBC claims that download support will be added for Mac OS X and Linux some time in 2008.

The BBC plans on transitioning its iPlayer service out of beta status with an official launch on December 25.

Subject: what a lame "solution"

Does anyone actually think they will ship a real Mac solution? The BBC certainly hasn't committed to doing it. However, they MIGHT if they shipped equally for all platforms [as in, Window's users also have to use this crappy Flash solution].

Subject: Not yet they haven't.

I went to there site and nothing they have online plays. It says it cannot be downloaded because I don't live in the UK. Therefore there solution isn't a solution at all and you still can't play anything off there lame site.

Subject: It works!

It tested this on my MAC and Linux machine last night and yes it works. Watched about two hours of TV including QI, Sky at Night and Dr Who confidential. The Linux machine used as an EEE PC running Xandros with no modifications. The MAC was an iBook G4.
