Apple Serves Up Java Release 6 for Tiger

Apple Serves Up Java Release 6 for Tiger

by , 9:15 AM EST, December 14th, 2007

Apple rolled out a new Java update for Mac OS X 10.4.10 and 10.4.11 on Friday. Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Release 6 improves reliability and compatibility with Java SE 5.0 and Java 1.4 and includes J2SE 5.0 version 1.5.0_13, and Java 1.4.2_16. The update is free and available via Software Update or as a download from the Apple Support Web site.

So does 10.5 already have these Java upgrades?

The site says the download is for "10.4.9 and later" so I would assume that includes Leopard.

I run 10.5.1 and this Java update was not brought up by Software Update, so I assume 10.5 already has it or there is some problem with the update and 10.5.

The 10.4.10 and higher seems misleading

From what I understand the Java update for Leopard was already issued.

It is not misleading. The site states specifically it is a 10.4 update. The "and higher" refers to updating 10.4.10 and 10.4.11. If there is a 10.4.12 (which is doubtful) it would probably apply to that too (although it would most likely be rolled into that build).

I have Leopard with Developer installed on a MacBook, the java self-reports, and the entries in /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions confirms it's only patched to 1.5.

505: java -version
java version "1.5.0_13"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_13-b05-237)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_13-119, mixed mode, sharing)
