Adobe Announces Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac
by , 12:05 AM EST, January 10th, 2008
Adobe introduced the next version of the consumer image editing application Photoshop Elements 6 on Thursday. The company plans to show off the app's new features, including a specialized version of Bridge CS3 and improved editing tools, during Macworld Expo 2008 starting on January 15.
Photoshop Elements 6 includes a version of Bridge CS3 geared towards consumer users. Bridge supports folder groupings, file search and filtering, the ability to display image metadata, support for keywords, saved searches, and a digital loupe tool.
The new version of the image editor sports a redesigned interface with tab-based tool organization. It also includes a Guided Edit mode that steps users through improving digital photos, a Photomerge tool that creates seamless panoramas from a series of images, the ability to blend the best parts from multiple group shots, one-click color correction, and more.
Users that are looking for more control over their images have access to improved black and white image conversion tools, color curve adjustments with Lightroom-like slider controls, lens distortion and vignette correction, a Quick Select tool that intelligently grabs parts of an image, along with several other Photoshop-style features.
Users can create photo albums based on several themes and layouts, and order printed and bound books. They can also order prints of their own images.
Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac will be available early in Adobe's second quarter of 2008. It is available for pre-order now and is priced at US$89.99, or $69.99 for upgrades from earlier versions.

offer a product that heavily duplicates funtions I already have in iPhoto and charge $90 for it. No thanks.
Compare the list of functions in Photoshop Elements--even 4, much less 6, and iPhoto. It's easy to find many that iPhoto doesn't have, starting with layers. Of course it duplicates functions. The point is that it ADDS dozens, maybe hundreds.
For a start, try selecting a non-rectangular portion of the image in iPhoto and making a mask so that adjustments apply only to the selection. Go ahead. We're waiting ... Now, use iPhoto to combine images, add text, etc. Heck, AppleWorks and Pages can do things with images that iPhoto cannot.
iPhoto is a good application for storing, cataloging, making simple changes/corrections and printing photos. It is not an image editor by any stretch of the term.

Enter "MACWORLD08" coupon and get 10% off your pre-order from the Adobe Store. Free shipping until March 24. BUT...they do charge tax.
Thanks! That applies to the upgrade, as well as the full product. With free standard shipping, the upgrade is $62.99.
The expected shipping date is March 16, but it will be here when it gets here. Adobe won't charge my credit card until the order ships.
Not really a contest, this.
The beauty of iPhoto is in it's storage and it's straighten tool.
Apart from that, it's not possible to make a comparison between the two.
Adobe applications are so comprehensive and versatile. I've just pre-ordered the Elements 6 upgrade from 4 and I'm looking forward to the improvements.
