Melbourne Australia Apple Store On the Way
Melbourne Australia Apple Store On the Way

Melbourne may be the first city in Australia to open an official Apple Store, beating out Sydney, which is also rumored to have an Apple presence on the way. Construction appears to have already begun for Apple's retail store in the city's Chadstone Shopping Centre, according to ifoAppleStore.
The mall is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere and recently completed an AU$88 million renovation project. Chadstone Shopping Center is home to 450 shops and restaurants.
Word that Apple was planning its own retail locations in Australia surfaced in February 2007. At that time, the Melbourne location was rumored to be a multi-level glass structure with features similar to Apple's New York and San Francisco flagship stores.
If you happen to be visiting the mall, you can see Apple's "opening soon" sign next to the Nike Women store on the ground floor. There is no word yet on when Apple's Melbourne store will officially open.
Observer Comments
Hmmm... my first reaction is to think that it's not necessarily an Apple retail store, but rather just the Computers Now (an Apple Authorised Reseller) expanding from the rather small shop it has downstairs next to the food court.
However, that shop was recently rebranded from "Apple Centre" to "Comp Now", perhaps because Apple required it so.
Chaddy would certainly be a more convenient location than South Yarra. At least for me
Quite impressive if it's true. It would mean Chastone's gone from one retailer selling Macs (Comp Now) before the Intel switch, to about six now. Market must be picking up!

Damn Melbourne beating out Sydney. Now if I can just get time off to come down the the opening ...
@ Schmidty: Apple itself has all but confirmed that this is one of their own stores (including hiring staff on their site).
In terms of the Sydney store it has begun construction is King St. Who knows when it will be open (in time for the Australian iPhone launch)?
