CDW Tracking Poll: Windows Vista Gaining Traction

by , 10:15 AM EST, January 14th, 2008

CDW Corporation on Monday announced the results of its third Windows Vista Tracking Poll, finding that adoption or evaluation of Microsoft’s new operating system in the business world has risen to 48 percent, up from the 29 percent found in the February 2007 poll. In addition, 35 percent of the respondents are in the process of migrating to the new OS, up from the previous poll’s 12 percent.

Of the 48 percent who have already adopted, or are now evaluating, Vista, 13 percent have completed their migration while another 61 percent expect to do so within the next 12 months. That 13 percent is up from 6 percent last time, although the percentage of those who plan on completing their migration within three or six months has declined since the previous poll: the former dropped from 17 percent to 11 percent, while the latter dropped from 25 percent to 21 percent. The percentage of respondents who said it will happen in 12 months was up one point, and the percentage of those who expect it to occur in more than 18 months was up three points.

Interest in most benefits and features was also down from the previous poll, with only one category -- improved search and organization -- up (by one point) and one category -- improved Windows update -- remaining the same. Categories that dropped the most were: improved security (down 13 points), new networking features (down 6 points), and improved patch management (down 6 points). Respondents could choose more than one category.

CDW also looked at adoption of Microsoft Office 2007 and found that 24 percent of those surveyed have upgraded to the new version of the suite, up from 6 percent last February. Of the 23 percent who said they plan on upgrading, 78 percent expect to do so over the next year.

Walker Information conducted the poll in collaboration with CDW between Oct. 31 and Nov. 7, 2007. The margin of error for the 772 IT decision makers surveyed was plus or minus 3.5 percent. CDW’s Web site hosts a complete PDF of the results.

I just heard from another user that they went back to XP from Vista after Vista crashed again. FUD story to try and bolster Vista's failure.

Erm ... even if the survey was conducted with incredibly sloppy methodology, a statistical breakdown of 700+ individuals carries just a *little* more weight than one personal anecdote.

Subject: But Linux is 1337!!!!

Oh well, there goes linux oppurtunity to become a big contender with Microsoft for the Desktop platform.....

Heh....man, I hate little script kiddies that think linux is the best....and they STILL think it's more secure even though the government had to help them find all their security bugs and they are only on rung 2!!!! (and that's not even the O/S)

Linux is dieing a very slow and painful death...sorta like ham radio operators.

Subject: But what about...

People that have evaluated or adopted Vista, and are now looking for alternatives? The high school where my wife works (brand new building, brand new computers, Vista...) is stuck with Vista which (along with the new Office Suite) is universally hated by the staff. Logins are problematic, printing is almost a black art (some machines can, some can't in spite of admins' best efforts)...Menus and familiar icons have disappeared, file and directory permission problems have forced them to take drastic measures, etc. etc.

When it came time for my mother in law to purchase a laptop two weeks ago, all that were available in-store (Best Buy) were Vista. However, Apple has a chunk of space there, with their own staff... She walked out with a MacBook. Even though I had never touched a Mac before (I'm a Linux guy) I was able to get it connected to a new wireless router (encrypted no less), install X11 libs and Open Office for her, and get her off the ground with Safari.

Subject: Talk about FUD

Linux is dying? Not according to the people that watch it, develop it, and use it. Usage is up. Ease of use has never been better. Installation is better than ever - easier than Windows in most cases. Hardware support is better than ever - even better than Vista in some areas. (not saying much though) Majore manufacturers are preloading it. The future of the major distros has never looked better. Heck, even Microsoft is taking notice - they've upped their FUD campaign against it!

OK, first off School Districts (and I can say this because I worked as an admin in one in Illinois) tend to spend CRAP on anything but hardware.

They will hire you just enough staff to just get things "working" and nothing more. So that is a bad point and MACs in a school district has always been a bad idea. Since Microsoft runs on 88% of desktops around the world, I feel bad for the kids stuck using MACs because when they get into the real world they have NO Microsoft skills what-so-ever.

I am currently a Network Admin for a security company in Chicago and we have half our computers running Vista right now. I will agree with the printing and problematic (old) hardware working with it but that's due to lazy hardware vendors (or in this Case HP) that just want to sell you another printer instead of writting another driver for vista.

Subject: I went back to Vista

As a software developer for a Microsoft partner, I got Vista Ultimate about a month before its official release back in October 2007. Bad experiences. Really bad. I won't bother to detail them, but ultimately I went back to XP.

Now, more than a year later, I recently built a new system and I wanted a 64bit OS. Windows XP Pro x64 or Vista Ultimate x64. I tried out xp 64, which is actually just a 64-bit Windows Server 2003 kernel, and it was terrible. Almost as bad as XP SP1. I gave it up after 3 days of fighting with it. Good for server use, bad for a desktop work station/gaming machine.

So I was left with Windows Vista Ultimate x64 (I play games too people, games)...

Wow. I like it. Its crazy. It's kind of like falling in love with the kind of woman you avoided for years. I hated on Vista for a year and I gave it another shot. The changes are minimal but just enough to keep me satisfied.

Now if only DirectX 10 didn't cause a near 50% loss in performance when I crank all my game's settings up to the max.

Seeing as you are a network admin I can understand the typo, but the computer is called a Mac even though it has a MAC
