REAL SQL Server 2008 Release 1 Ships at Macworld

REAL SQL Server 2008 Release 1 Ships at Macworld

by , 8:55 AM EST, January 15th, 2008

REAL Software on Tuesday said that Release 1 of REAL SQL Server 2008 will ship during this week’s Macworld Expo. The new version of the multi-user database server features better SQL standards compliance and better PHP compatibility on Macs running Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard and Linux.

A single server that supports unlimited users is US$500, while a five-pack is $2,000 and a ten-pack is $3,000. A 12-month unlimited deployment license sells for $9,000 and allows developers to bundle REAL SQL Server with a custom application and sell an unlimited number of servers for a fixed price.

REAL also offers a SQL Server Developer Edition that’s free to developers.

Subject: A bummed out 4D developer

I applaud Real for its beautifully simple and effective pricing structure. I can see how this promotes the product within its developer community and encourage development with its product.

To this date, I as a 4D-developer have to buy a single copy of 4D server for each instance on a given server in my lab. So in effect, if I want to test my routines, scripts, methods or a particular feature like server-to-server communication I have to pay a premium to 4D to be able to create an environment where I can push out the best product possible.

To make this even more challenging, 4D's cryptic, archaic and prohibitive registration and installation policies quickly diminish the yearn to stay with 4D. The new v11 registration policy is a hoot!

Sadly, you wont be able to see direct benchmark comparisons between Real and 4D server in print because 4D server licensing policy prohibits publishing test results without consensus from 4D Inc. So that means I have to do this in private in my lab on my own which inevitably requires an additional 4D server license just to run a comparison!

I applaud Geoff Pearlman and Real for not treating their developer base like a bunch of thieves and hoodlums.

One bummed out Developer
