Apple Posts Mac OS X 10.5.2 Update to Leopard
by , 4:40 PM EST, February 11th, 2008
On Monday afternoon, Apple posted the long-awaited Mac OS X 10.5.2 update to for Leopard. The update addressed a myriad of areas including Active Directory, a new Stacks option, transparent menus, iChat, Mail, printing, Time Machine and much more.
"The 10.5.2 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac," according to Apple.
The Combo Update is 343 MB.
Those who want to learn more abut the security updates included in Mac OS X 10.5.2 can consult Apple's Security Updates Page.
Observer Comments
While the update downloads, I'll ponder whether this includes Safari with the markedly faster WebKit, as rumored. The only Safari mention in the release notes says, "Addresses issues with Safari reliably resolving certain domains." This implies it does not, unless Apple is being rather modest.

Once again...this will require new software for the Airport Base Station. Apple may or may not be working on this, but it certainly wouldn't be part of an OS update. The fact that it didn't show up today means nothing.

I downloaded the update only through Software Update - about 180mb. Once installed my 2.6GHz Intel Mac Pro would not restart (second optic drive supplied by Apple fails to recognise at startup and continues to whir away with no screen and no startup). I disconnected power and data cable to the 2nd drive and it started OK.
Tue Feb 12, 2008 1:06 pm Subject: Problem with the update stalling on installation?
After I downloaded the update and it restarts to install, the blue background comes up and a dialog box pops up saying that it's configuring for installation. Then the machine just stalls and nothing happens. It sat like that for 10 minutes and nothing happened. The only thing you can do is a hard shut down and restart. I know of one other person who is having this same problem.
I'm on a G5 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Tower with 5GB of ram and I'm updating from 10.5.1
My main software is Adobe CS2, Quark 6, Suitcase Fusion, Fetch, Cararra, Dreamweaver 8 and various web browsers.
The other person I spoke to having this problem is also using a Intel machine, but he had to do a complete reinstall after this happened to him, because it messed up the operating system.
Any ideas?
Ever since I installed the 10.5.2 update, my Mac Book Pro "Core Duo" 2.16 can no longer access my wireless network. I tried plugging it directly into the router and it works, but s-l-o-w-ly.
My Wife's macbook 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo (which is running 10.4.11) has great wireless connectivity, so I don't think it's a problem with the router.
Any ideas?

Don't hard reboot the system!!!!!!!
This update does take quite a while. The notes state clearly that it can pause on that screen (with no apparent progress) for quite some time. Patience is a virtue with this update.
The hard reboot is what screwed up your friends machine. It got interrupted during the update process and was put into an unstable state.

I have been patiently waiting an hour for this new 10.5.2 to start configuring and it is still stuck on the blue screen with no progress. Any ideas?
Is this the first attempt, or is this after an interrupt via reboot? What kind of machine?
An hour definitely isn't good. Most should be seeing progress after 5 min or so. Some even as much as 10 min. What size hard drive do you have?
The "don't reboot" warning is for those who get frustrated after only a minute or two. This update definitely doesn't happen as quickly as previous ones.
I waited for half an hour (during which the message "writing package receipt" was displayed), did a hard reboot. After that the machine booted twice, and I could log in. I checked "This Mac" and found I had 10.5.2. I was not sure the installation was really complete, so I found the update package under /Library/Updates, and did a second install. That went well.
All in all, not a seamless update.

Sorry to hear it did not go particularly well for you. I've run the update across 3 different machines - a MBP, a dual G5 and a G4 iBook. All completed, however the iBook took quite a while (probably a total of 30 minutes) to get to the second reboot. Sat for 10 min or so on the "patching files" screen. May be a combination of processor, RAM and full hard drive. Or possibly significant disk repairs going on in the background (the iBook drive, in particular, was thrashing during the first part of the upgrade).
Report it back to Apple. They can't fix it if nobody tells them about it. They won't read it here.
I just ran the update this morning and thought my Mac had hung, but I just decided to wait it out and sure enough it completed. Probably took about 30 minutes. I do have one problem and it's with Time Machine. It seems to be perpetually backing-up. This has never happened before. I seem to have to stop it manually and, of course, no real back-up has taken place.
Any ideas?

Hi mate. I hear where you're coming from, I had exactly the same problems myself and it drove me mad trying to restart every time. It would shut down ok, but then the download or copying bar wouldn't move. It would pause, just like you're saying. And then I'd manually restart, check for updates, the update would be there and I'd try re-installing and the same thing would happen. People told me to be patient, I even left it on overnight...I'd wake up and it would be in the same place I left it.
There is a solution though!
Go to the apple page: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1052comboupdate.html
And then download it from there. You'll get the disc etc on your desktop but don't worry. When it's finished downloading it ejects and the system is up to date.
If you click back to check for software updates, you may then get one for Leopard graphics as in my case. Just finish off the updates and it's all done! Then when you click on software updates again, there's no further updates to download.
It's bizarre why for some people it stalls. I can only presume in my case it's because I part-downloaded the upgrade at an internet cafe and finished it off at home.
Try the Apple downloaded from their site and all should be sorted.
Best of luck,
Jon(UK)
I successfully updated my desk top last night. I am still trying to update the laptop. It seemed to crash at the patch stage. After 30 minutes I tried rebooting. It will not start up. I am now quite frightened. Fortunately have everything important on the desk top and three externals. Any suggestions as how to restart/reboot my PowerBook G4?
Sun Feb 17, 2008 4:46 pm Subject:
Define "crashed". Was it not showing apparent progress during the patching? It may (or may not) have been doing its job, just taking a lot of time doing it. Some machines update faster than others, apparently.
However, if it is not booting at all now, the point is kind of moot. You may have to reformat and reinstall.
"Crashed"= nothing changing during patching for over half an hour (probably closer to an hour).
I can't reinstall as I don't have enough room! As you say I may have to start from scratch which is worse than a new iBook, because at least that strips my prefs from the previous system.
I just hope that I have a reasonably up to date back up re applications on the external.
Wed Feb 20, 2008 2:24 pm Subject: In my case, it took a veeeerrryyyyy long time, but...
ok, in my case it took a very long time to update, I had already problems w/leopard, crashs by it self very frequently, very long time to boot, imac G5 2GHz 2GB.
I had tried booth software update and the combo, both after the very long update, wenever it tried to restart by it self, it shutsdown my computer instead of logging in.
I had to reinstall and import from time machine!
waiting for a real update instead of a downgrade.
I bought Leopard (10.5.1) from Amazon to upgrade from 10.3.9. It installed fine but attempts to update to 10.5.2 have yet to finish. I tried downloading the Combo from JonUK but it too teases you downloading the first 4.2 MB or so (out of 343MB) and then just sits there with no obvious network activity.
I did have some luck updating the smaller packages that were part of the normal Software Update check (Garage Band, etc.) by doing them one at a time but the most useful and interesting ones (QuickTime and Mac OS 10.5.2) just stall after initially downloading a part.
Could it be simply that the Apple download servers are overloaded?
It's me again and now I'm more convinced that it's an Apple download server issue than my Mac. Reading about the same issue on various blogs I tried almost everything including a Safe Boot.
In desperation I re-installed 10.5.1 from my DVD like another blog site suggested. After the 2-hour re-install I went to the Apple site and started the MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.2.dmg download. Sure enough, it downloaded 4.8 out of 343.4 MB and stalled. I said, ok, this is just a file, so I booted up my Windoze laptop (horrors) and started the same download. It downloaded 4.93 MB and sure enough stalled just like the Mac! If it's not the Apple download server issue then what is it?
Having read about other 10.5.2 upgrade issues people are having this begs the question -- is it even worth doing the upgrade or should I just stick with 10.5.1 and wait for future Leopard updates to stabilize?
Thanks.

Well perhaps, it's AT&T DSL which may not be optimal, but it doesn't explain why no other downloads/connections fail nor do any downloads/connections fail for my next door neighbor who is using the same ISP. I've had the same ISP for years and I never saw this issue with pre-10.5.2 updates. But yesterday I used my PC at work to downlad the *.dmg files, moved them to USB stick, transferred them to the Mac and everything installed fine. The connection at work is considerably faster than my ISP so maybe that helped.
I'm also not the only one facing this issue. On this and other blogs several people see stalls and for every person who bothers to post a message there many others who don't bother. These updates are rather large. It would be interesting to see usage statistics on the Apple download servers.
BTW, I started the ~50MB Leopard Graphics Update last night and it stalled for hours after downloading 80% of it. I rebooted this morning and it finished.
updated to 10.5.2 this morning and i could not use my superdrive after that. my macbook ejects the disc, any disc, including the original Leopard installer disc. this also happened after I installed 10.5.0, but when i upgraded to 10.5.1, the optical drive started to work again.
how do i go back to 10.5.1?
