Microsoft Rejects Yahoo Bid Rejection
Microsoft Rejects Yahoo Bid Rejection
by , 8:10 AM EST, February 12th, 2008
Microsoft responded to Yahoo's take over bid rejection with a rejection of its own on Monday. The Redmond-based company said in a statement that it feels "moving forward promptly to consummate a transaction" will best serve both companies.
Microsoft executives did not say what the company's next step would be. At this point it could counter with an offer that comes in above the original US$31 a share, or $44.6 billion, offer, or it could try to sway shareholders and move for a hostile takeover.
"The Yahoo response does not change our belief in the strategic and financial merits of our proposal. As we have said previously, Microsoft reserves the right to pursue all necessary steps to ensure that Yahoo's shareholders are provided with the opportunity to realize the value inherent in our proposal," Microsoft said.
Microsoft presented the Yahoo with an unsolicited buy out offer on February 1 after the Internet search company reported a 23 percent drop in earnings. Yahoo responded on Monday by stating if felt Microsoft was "substantially undervaluing" the company.

Yes, that is just what we need, Goohoo...As if Google isn't already far to powerful in the search market already. People such as you bag on Microsoft for being too powerful and controlling the market, while Google heads in the same exact direction. We don't need to add fuel to Google's fire. They are already letting their power go to their heads. Google has the power to make or break companies at will, and they do it. If Google and Yahoo merged they would control a gigantic portion of web search capacity, and would basically be able to decide which sites people could find, and which they couldn't. I don't want any company having that much power over what I view, or over my business's websites.
Did I say Slay Microsoft? no. and this is part of a continuing thread about what should happen to Yahoo.
Days ago, I suggested NOT that Google buy out Yahoo, which is what MSFT wants to do, but rather buy a stake in it, a nice sizeable investment, but not controlling interest. Kind of what Microsoft did for Apple back in the 90s.
Of course, it could come back to bite them on the butt, but if the true spirit of competition is to keep your friends close and your enemies closer, a "goohoo" makes a lot of sense in that scenario.
Oh, but right now, I'd love to slay Microsoft for inflicting their new file formats on the world. Office 2007 for PC and 2008 for Mac are AWFUL!

Is it really? Any idea what the purpose is behind that? Is it security or just trying to save space?
Seriously, I'm curious. I haven't used the latest version of Office, so I have no opinion either way about it. In fact, I hope it is a step up in performance compared to 2004 on an Intel machine. If so, I'll be happy.
They zip 'em because of size. The text files inside the zip archive use xml for formatting that unfortunatly makes the files much larger than they would be otherwise. Text compresses easily.
Performance wise it has more overhead, so it'll run slower compared to earlier copies of office. There are changes to the user interface that could make the standard office user frustrated. The bells and whistles that have been added have little direct value for the casual user.
All in all, it's a great productivity suite for an office that generates alot of paper work. Casual use at home doesn't really justify it's price tag.
I like notepad.
