PCMAG: Leopard is Best Consumer OS Ever Written

PCMAG: Leopard is Best Consumer OS Ever Written

by , 5:00 PM EST, February 21st, 2008

Mac OS X 10.5 is the best OS ever written for the vast majority of consumers, according to Edward Mendelson at PC Magazine on Wednesday. Leopard was characterized as startlingly fast, brilliantly streamlined and packed with conveniences and innovations.

Mr. Mendelson spent three months with Leopard and concluded that while Linux is a treat for propeller heads and Vista will have its share of devotees (once SP1 is out), Mac OS X 10.5 is the most polished and easiest to use OS.

The author looked at networking with PCs, which had some wrinkles that were mostly worked out in 10.5.2 and finally more reliable than in Tiger. He also pointed out that Time Machine, while really easy to use, doesn't do well with large database files that change often, like Entourage mail.

Later in the review, Mr. Mendelson raved about Apple's e-mail program, improvements to the Preview app and the improved Stack management in 10.5.2. The author also pointed out how easy it is in virtualization mode to just double click a Windows application and have it appear in a Mac OS X Window. "If you're in the market for a new machine, it's time to look seriously at a Mac, especially now that all Macs can run Windows along with OS X," he said.

Mr. Mendelson's conclusion was particularly notable. In the Internet age with complex networking and media files, an OS has to have certain characteristics, and Leopard fills the bill.

"Leopard again raises the question of whether to switch from Windows to a Mac," Mr. Mendelson summarized. "I've found Vista to be a major disappointment that tends to look worse the more I use it. I still use Windows XP for getting serious work done in long, complicated documents. But OS X is easier to manage and maintain and I vastly prefer OS X to Windows for Web-browsing, mail, and especially for any task that involves graphics, music, or video. Leopard performs all such tasks even better than previous versions did—and Leopard is the only OS on the planet that works effortlessly and intuitively in today's world of networked computers and peripherals.

"Leopard is far from perfect, but it's better than any alternative, and it's getting harder and harder to find good reasons to use anything else." [Emphasized text by TMO.]

That's exactly what Macintosh customers have been saying for years. It's notable that even PC Magazine now recognizes that and has consistently panned Vista compared to Mac OS X.

A little over the top there, dude. The same guy you'd like to send to hell has shifted vast amounts of his personal fortune into philanthropic ventures. Certainly a lot more money than you've allowed for in your charity budget, I'll bet. You may not like the products his company produces but aligning his value as a human being with Hitler is just taking it too far.

I wonder how much of the giving is Bill's personality and how much is the influence of Melinda. I don't know, I am just pondering.

Irrespective, the result is the same. Less suffering from malaria, among other outcomes.

It is not irrespective, how philanthropic was he before the marriage? What are the "other outcomes", quid pro quo?

This happens on a lot of blogs. Someone criticizes Bill Gates and then a poster, often a stranger to the blog, brings up the Foundation.

You might not like his company or their products, but Bill Gates is hardly evil. Give the man his due - he and his wife have contributed much to make this world and the US a better place.

Really don't know how much of the philanthropy is from the marriage. Maybe he feels badly about his past aggressive business dealings? Who knows...

Also, I only brought this topic up when someone else (another guest) compared him to Hitler and wished him a slow death. Look, I'm not a fan of his OS - I wonder why anyone would want to run XP or Vista on their Mac (its like wishing your supermodel GF had a few warts) - but admit he has given significant funds to improve the schools in this country. While his peers pour money into political campaigns, he has choosen to do things differently. (IMHO political gifts really don't help anyone).

Is he a saint? No, but he is not the devil either...

It was back in the '80s, I doubt that he remembers me as it was at an AppleFest near Chicago. No he isn't the devil, or even a demon, and certainly not a Hitler, but he is a businessman. Not that there isn't anything wrong with that, many robber baron industrialists gave away fortunes in their older years.

I'm no stranger to these fora, thankyou very much.

If you want to call me out on a choice of word, well, what can I say... I hope you and your collection of anoraks live a long and happy life together.

If you want to know the "other outcomes" then do your own fucking homework.

That's easy to do when one is a multi-billionaire. Someone who makes, say, 5 billion a year can donate 75% of his income and still make over a billion. Someone who makes $5k a year would never be able to donate 75%.

Just as calling Bill Gates Hitler is taking things too far, so is telling someone Bill Gates is more philanthropic than he is.

Click the link for the original article, that states you need third-party software for that: Parallels or VMWare. Boot Camp dual-boot is the only built-in feature.

Mac OSX is $#!%. Vista isn't perfect, that's for sure, but I'll take it any day over that stupid Dock and those animated bouncing icons. Getting around on a Mac is more painful than a trip to the dentist....and by the way, the hardware area ain't the panacea macheads claim it is, either. Have fun at the Apple store....
