Thieves Steal Mac & iPod, Leave Dell in Plain Sight

Thieves Steal Mac & iPod, Leave Dell in Plain Sight

by , 10:05 AM EST, February 27th, 2008

What happens when you thieves have taste? They'll ferret out the iPod and a Mac in a house they're burgling, and leave behind the Dell sitting out in plain sight. That's what happened to a resident of the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, who sent his story to Gawker.

"True story," wrote the anonymous submitter. "My apartment in 'prime Williamsburg' was broken into. The thieves searched out my iPod and PowerBook, but they didn't touch my roommate's Dell that was sitting out in plain sight on our kitchen table."

Just for Brooklyn flavor, he added, "PS: A kitchen table - suck it Manhattan."

Gadget Lap blogger Charlie Sorrel noted that the thieves may have simply had the knowledge that Apple's kit will sell well, while dell -- or most PCs -- usually fetch a small fraction of their original purchase price, but it still makes for a poignant statement on Dell's worth when compared to Apple.

What some "analysts" still don't get. AAPL is a steal.

If you have a Mac and an iPod, you 'MUST" have money, at least better tastes.
If you have nice things then the rats know you're worth ripping off. Has no one seen "It Takes A Thief"? http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/ittakesathief/ittakesathief.html
These guys violate people every week just because they have nice things and no clue.

So maybe the secret is to put the Mac in the Dell case and leave it out in the open.

Subject: Stolen Macs frequent eBay

Unfortunately users who don't know, and who think they are going to get a cheap deal buy Macs off eBay, and end up getting ripped off. To avoid being one who is ripped off, make sure that the original seller has the original system discs which shipped with the Mac. If they don't, suspect the machine is stolen, and report it to the police. If the person lost the discs, they need to call AppleCare to ask for replacement discs. Hopefully AppleCare will be smart enough to note when a serial number of the registrant does not match the caller, to assume the machine might be stolen, and to resist giving them the discs.
