NewsFire Now Available for Free

by , 8:45 AM EST, March 4th, 2008

David Watanabe quietly made a change to his NewsFire RSS reader application: It's now free. The move brings NewsFire 1.5 in line with the no-cost news reader trend that started with NetNewsWire.

Mr. Watanabe said on his blog "So why am I doing this? Call it an experiment to draw people into the fold. Call it temporary insanity. Call it good will. Call it stupidity. I'm never really sure what my motivations are, but this one feels right in my gut."

NewsFire sports a minimalist interface that lets users group news feeds and user-defined rules, supports smart groups, and "floats" the newest articles to the top of the list.

NewsFire 1.5 is available for download at the NewsFire Web site.

I still prefer NetNewsWire. After a few minutes with NewsFire 1.5 I went back to NNW. I miss its ability to sync online (so I can use NewsGator mobile on my iPhone) and the combined view where I can see headlines & summaries together.
