AirPort Firmware 7.3.1 Restores AirDisk Support

AirPort Firmware 7.3.1 Restores AirDisk Support

by , 7:50 AM EDT, March 20th, 2008

Apple released Time Capsule and AirPort Base Station (802.11n) Firmware 7.3.1 Wednesday evening along with Time Machine and AirPort Update 1.0. The Firmware update restores AirDisk support so users can backup via Time Machine to a USB drive connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station.

The firmware update also includes other bug and security fixes.

The update requires an AirPort Extreme (802.11n) Base Station, AirPort Update 2008-001, and Time Machine and AirPort Update 1.0. It is available via the Software Update application, or as a downloadable installer at the Apple Support Web site.

The 7.3.1 release also applies to Time Capsule, giving you the ability to "archive" your Time Machine backup to an external disk connected to the USB port.

Subject: 7.3.1 killed all wireless connections

After spending eternity on hold, the Apple tech told me that they're going crazy with calls since the 7.3.1 update. The problem was that I could no longer connect wirelessly to the airport after the update. The solution was to perform a factory reset of the router and start over (stick a paper clip into the small hole on the back of router until amber light on front starts to blink - then connect via the utility and set it back up).

Subject: Firmware 7.3.1 kills wireless connection to Airport Express

Hi,

I'm onto my second Airport Express in 2 weeks. Last week I spent an hour on the phone to tech support and they had no suggestions. Eventually they decided the unit was faulty and issued a replacement.

After waiting a week the new unit arrived, plugged in, set up and worked flawlessly.

Then I applied firmware 7.3.1 and the problems started again.

Rolling back the firmware fixed the connection issue.

To roll back the firmware to 7.3:

1. Connect to the Airport Express via an ethernet cable
2. From the menu choose Base Station -> Upload Firmware
3. Select version 7.3 from the Upload Version drop down list
4. Click OK

Once the Airport Express restarts you should be able to detect it wirelessly.

Do not apply 7.3.1 again until this issue is rectified.

Cheers,
Nick
