Motley Fool Suggests Apple Buy Netflix, Akamai, or Sun Microsystems

Motley Fool Suggests Apple Buy Netflix, Akamai, or Sun Microsystems

by , 9:40 PM EDT, March 31st, 2008

With Apple Inc. having more than US$18.4 billion in cash reserves, the Motley Fool's Tim Beyers has three suggestions for what to do with that money: Namely, buy either Netflix, Sun Microsystems, or Akamai. According to the column, each of the companies brings benefits to Apple in terms of growth, or at least stymieing Microsoft's own future plans for growth.

Netflix, the DVD subscription/rental company, falls into the latter category of companies that Microsoft is involved with or for whom might have plans. Mr. Beyers wrote, "Buying Netflix would ruin Mr. Softy's chances of becoming a serious competitor in digital delivery and would greatly expand the list of titles available via iTunes -- titles that, right now, aren't being monetized."

Akamai is the company that supplies iTunes' bandwidth, as well as other distributed bandwidth Apple utilizes. Apple was also an early investor in Akamai, but Mr. Beyers points out that Microsoft is also a partner in the company.

"Even so," he wrote, "I suspect that there would be less of a fight over Akamai when it comes to Microsoft. For as much business as these two do, it's Limelight Networks that supports Xbox Live."

Which leaves Sun Microsystems as his last suggestion for an acquisition. Mr. Beyers sees Sun potentially facilitating Apple's growth in the corporate market due to Sun's firm footing in that market.

"Consider [Sun's Unix operating system] Solaris," he wrote, "which remains the most popular flavor of the Unix operating system for business deployments. Since Mac OS X is built on a Unix kernel, it's possible -- in theory, at least -- to run software designed for a Sun SPARC machine on a Mac, and vice versa."

He doesn't offer too much detail about how Apple could leverage Sun's enterprise presence other than to say that Sun has so far been able to operate in that space while maintaining an independent reputation. He doesn't explore Apple's lack of credibility as a consistent partner in the enterprise space, or how the two disparate cultures would be able to integrate with each other.

With so much money in its cash reserves, speculation is likely to increase concerning what Apple will do with that money. Mr. Beyers' piece wasn't intended so much as a blueprint, but rather as a wide net cast over the topic. We expect to see more such pieces going forward.

Subject: Sun?

Now why would Apple want to buy into a low/no-growth segment of the industry? They might as well go whole hog and buy SGI or Cray.

Subject: Yeah, Sun?

Leave it to a tech know-nothing to suggest MacOS and Solaris interoperability. Apple's big problem with purchasing Sun is that their products have never been engineered toward the corporate user. The iPhone still doesn't have an enterprise email system plug-in.

here is this guy from motley fool suggesting strategic moves for a world-class company. the internet seems to have given a voice to complete dabblers.

i doubt if any of his suggestions are under consideration at apple.

IMO Netflix would be a good acquisition; it would meld with the iTS well. Sun might make some sense IF other things, like compatibility work out. I'm not sure I understand why Apple would want Akamai.

The only one that makes any sense in the slightest way is Akamai. Netflix is a dying model with digital distribution the future. Sun...um no. Even though Akamai is used with iTunes, it's still not a core competency for Apple. I say option D - none of the above.

Subject: Mac OS X/Solaris

There is a lot Mac OS X could gain from Solaris... ZFS, Zones, etc...
Security Feature Set:

RBAC

Veriexec

MAC

along with other features... Not to mention an influx of engineers/community working on combining the best features of each OS. The possibility of new hardware running OS X on PPC, SPARC, and X86 if they would choose too.

The addition of MySQL, Java, enterprise credibility, the return of the Xraid (re-branded Sun storage).

Now only if they cold purchase yahoo and expand online. Zimbra looks very tempting to compete with Exchange and adding Asterisk/Freeswitch to get into VOIP in one server package very appealing
