Apple Introduces AirDisk II for MacBook Air

Apple Introduces AirDisk II for MacBook Air

by , 7:30 AM EDT, April 1st, 2008

Apple announced the immediate availability of the new AirDisk II for the MacBook Air on Tuesday, April 1. The new USB-based drive adds a portable removable storage option to Apple's ultra portable laptop.

The AirDisk II sports a USB 2.0 interface, an Alps drive mechanism, and virtually limitless storage capacity thanks to its removable 5.25-inch disks. The unit weighs only 3.2 pounds and is bus powered, eliminating the need for a bulky external power supply.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs commented "We listen to our customers, and they told us they wanted a portable storage option for the MacBook Air. I'm sure they'll be as impressed with this technology as I am."

He added "Isn't this the coolest thing ever?"

Apple is also considering reducing the MacBook Air's default RAM configuration to 640K from 2GB because Jonathan Ive has it on good authority that no one will ever need more than 640K.

The AirDisk II (product number 04-01) is available in Platinum for US$129.99.

Microsoft by now has a legion of engineers feverishly copying the AirDisk II, and will have a slighly slower, heavier, and less compatible version ready to ship for the Christmas shopping season. In lovely beige.
