Office 2008 for Mac Sales Soaring

Office 2008 for Mac Sales Soaring

by , 1:40 PM EDT, May 13th, 2008

Microsoft announced on Tuesday that sales for Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac have been soaring, selling faster than any previous version of the suite.

Microsoft also reaffirmed its commitment to future products for the Mac and said that the current version of Office for Mac is selling faster than any previous version for the Mac in the last 19 years.

The Mac BU also said that they are releasing service pack SP1 for the suite at noon Pacific Time.

"The velocity of sales for Office 2008 is nearly three times as compared with the launch sales of Office 2004." said Craig Eisler, general manager of the Mac BU at Microsoft

C|Net Australia cited a Microsoft marketing manager who, while declining to give all the credit to soaring Mac sales, said, "Of course that's one of the components that is helping us."

Fortune magazine has estimated that Microsoft has had annual revenues in the past of about US$350M for the Mac productivity suite with profits as high as $200M. In addition, the NPG group has reported that 20 percent of Microsoft Office's U.S retail sales are the Mac version.

As those numbers continue to grow, thanks to Mac sales, Microsoft will have even more reason to raise its commitment to the product. That could be one reason behind the announcement of VBA support in the next version.

Subject: Sales don't equate to usage

I bought MS Office 2008 right after it became available.
Installed it and then UNinstalled it 2 days later.
I am back to using Office 2004.

I bought it right away because:
1. $150 is not expensive
2. I was worried about not being able to open docx files received from Windows Office 2007 users.

Well, I have only received one docx-formatted Word doc ever.
And, Office 2008 and Dreamweaver don't play well together.

Office 2008 is shelfware at my business.

Subject: I'm not soaring...

Given the less than complimentary initial reviews and the fact that I work in a primarily Windoze environment that uses VBA a LOT, I've stuck with MSO 2004. I'll take another look when the new VBA-restored version comes out.

Subject: Trial Version?

Seriously, when is a trial version going to be released? I don't purchase software anymore without installing and using the trial first.

Same can be said for Vista. Every machine my company has purchased in the last year has been 'downgraded' to XP SP2. My next notebook will be a Mac though.

MS still has a large OS market share, like it or not. They also know there is a large market for Mac's. They'd be bigger morons not to offer a product for that platform. They know that as Mac sales soar, so does the potential for more sales of Mac compatible office products. Sounds like a good reason to be happy to me.

I suggest if you work for a large company check to see if you have a home use license. Our agreement with MS allows employees to lease office for home use for a one time fee of $21.95 after shipping - the lease allows you to use office for as long as you work the company or the company keeps its license with MS active

I got an iMac and office 2008 for $22 bucks but I still use neo office on it versus office

Subject: Office 2008-agree with you, davebarnes

I haven't gone so far as to uninstall the entire office suite, but I am considering it. I no longer use excel or word 08 versions, preferring the 04 versions. For the "benefit" of a "cleaner interface", the 08 versions are slower on both G5 and Intel machines.
