Leopard 10.5.3 Brings Sync with Google Contacts

Leopard 10.5.3 Brings Sync with Google Contacts

by , 3:40 PM EDT, June 2nd, 2008

Apple's release of OS X Leopard 10.5.3 Update last week now allows users to sync their Mac OS X Address Book with Google Contacts.

"We're happy to tell you that starting today, [May 28] it's easier to sync up your contact lists. The Address Book application in Mac OS X 10.5.3 now lets iPhone users sync their Address Book with Google Contacts. To try it, go to the Address Book menu, choose Preferences, and then check Synchronize with Google. It’ll ask for your Google account and password, then automatically update your contacts every time you sync your iPhone," Mike Morton wrote for the Google Mac Team.

The feature is only available in OS X Leopard, version 10.5.3 or later.

I updated to MacOS 10.5.3 last week but this option does not appear in my Addressbook. Anybody else has the same problem?

Neither do I. I wonder what the trick is.

Subject: You have to have an iPhone

There is a hack by editing some plist files, but by design you don't have the option unless you have an iPhone setup in iTunes. If you re-read the Apple quote, you'll see the fine print.

mm.. That is interesting. I wonder why they restrict it to iPhone users. The other sync options are enabled.

Why would this feature be restricted to iPhone users? Bummer.

Subject: Shoving it down my throat?

This is ridiculous. The google sync is something that I've been hoping and waiting for. I payed money to use ALL the features of the operating system. Why should I have to take the time out of my day to hack my machine in order to get something I PAYED for.

I am disappointed that they are so desperate that they are shoving the iPhone down my throat...

You people are such whiners, how could Google Contacts + Address Book sync possibly function without an iPhone? It'd be ***USELESS****!

Anyone who can't see the obvious reason you need to have an iPhone in order to sync up the address book of their computer with an online service is a blind fool

this should be available for everyone. No reason why not.

I don't have an iPhone, but do have an iPod Touch, and the option does appear.

It works with my addressbook and gmail just fine. No iphone needed.

BUT, watch out, it takes all the email addresses you EVER used in gmail and puts them in your addressbook. So, unless you want to keep every email addy you ever used in gmail, wait until they get their act together and give you choice options for the sync from gmail account to addressbook. It took me half an hour to clean out my addressbook from the superfluous entries.
