Tim Cook Buys $3 Million in Nike Stock as Shares Rebound After Earnings Drop

Apple CEO Tim Cook has increased his investment in Nike, sending a clear signal at a tense moment for the sportswear giant. This week, Cook disclosed a nearly $3 million open market purchase of Nike shares, a move that quickly caught Wall Street’s attention.

Cook bought 50,000 Class B shares on December 22 at an average price of $58.97 per share. The transaction lifted his total holdings to about 105,000 shares, now worth close to $6 million. More importantly, it marked his largest open market purchase of Nike stock in years, at a time when the company faces investor pressure and a sliding share price.

According to Reuters, Nike shares rose between 2 percent and 5 percent in premarket and early trading after the filing became public. The rebound followed a sharp selloff earlier in the week, triggered by disappointing quarterly results and ongoing weakness in China, one of Nike’s key markets.

Cook’s move

Cook’s relationship with Nike runs deep. He joined the board in 2005 and became lead independent director in 2016 after co-founder Phil Knight stepped down as chairman. Alongside his role as Apple CEO, he also chairs Nike’s compensation committee, placing him at the center of the company’s governance.

That context matters. Investors often view insider purchases as confidence signals, especially when a stock has fallen hard. Nike shares dropped about 10 percent immediately after earnings on December 18, extending losses to roughly 13 percent in the days that followed. Cook’s purchase helped ease that decline.

A vote of confidence in new leadership

Market watchers see the buy as support for Nike’s turnaround under CEO Elliott Hill, who returned to the company last year after retiring. Analysts described the transaction as the largest open market purchase by a Nike director or executive in more than a decade.

Cook rarely makes moves like this. When he does, investors notice.
