Adobe Releases DNG Converter & Camera Raw 4.5

Adobe Releases DNG Converter & Camera Raw 4.5

by , 9:05 AM EDT, July 29th, 2008

Along with Photoshop Lightroom 2.0, Adobe released DNG Converter & Camera Raw 4.5 on Tuesday. The update added support for the Olympus E 420 and E 520 cameras.

DNG Converter & Camera Raw 4.5 requires Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop Elements 4.01 or higher. Using version 4.0 or higher of the plug-in will disable the ability to open camera RAW images in Photoshop CS2.

DNG Converter & Camera Raw 4.5 is free and available for download at the Adobe Web site.

It's inexcusable to me that Adobe is using the camera raw thing as leverage to force people to upgrade to Photoshop CS3, by requiring it for the newest Camera Raw plugins that include the latest digital cameras. I passed over a Canon G9 because of this, as I'm perfectly happy with CS2 (don't have Intel yet). I can't imagine any technical reason for this, it just looks like outright extortion.

I agree, I think Adobe should add functionality to old products and provide updates for free. Why should I have to spend money for them to develop new capabilities and extend file format support? Adobe's problem is that they're paying their employees too much! If they used prison/slave labor they could probably cut the price of application development in half! Them maybe Memphoid and I would get CS 3.

All you have to do is use the free DNG Converter above and convert your files to DNG. Then CS3 can read them. It's a free solution.

I meant to say, then CS2 can read them. Sorry.

Use the latest DNG Converter to convert your RAWs into DNGs and you can open them in ANY Adobe Camera Raw (i.e. Photoshop).

Oh, and don't be so melodramatic...
