Tax Free Weekend in Some States Benefits Apple Back-to-School Customers

by , 3:45 PM EDT, August 1st, 2008

Some states have a tax free weekend for specific back-to-school items. Apple customers in Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, New Mexico North Carolina and Tennessee could benefit from a new, tax free Mac this weekend.

The limits vary by state. For example, the limit in Alabama for a computer is US$750, but North Carolina allows $3,500.

Typically, the Apple store concierge will have a paper handout describing what items are tax free and the exemption limits.

In some states the tax free dates are already in progress, and for most the dates are Aug 1-3, 2008 for computers.

South Carolina is participating in the tax-free weekend, as well. And since there is now an Apple store in Charleston, SC, those of us in SC can join in the savings!

Here is an interesting trick my husband and I found in the local newspaper. A Mac dealer (MacAuthority) advertised 17" MacBook Pros at $1499 (just under the tax free $1500 limit). This is the slightly older 2.4 model. The catch was that you had to purchase the 4 gig memory upgrade for $399 at the same time effectively making the price of the computer $1898 which we thought was still a pretty good price. Since the Apple Online Store offers the same unit (refurbed) at the same price but with only 2 gig memory and the Apple Store would still need to charge the tax (which is about 9.5%), the MacAuthority offer was pretty attractive. We got one as soon as we could. If you are on the fence, jump on this one. We really were looking to get a Pro soon. They still had a fair stock when we were there around noon Saturday.

Of course, since you don't say just WHERE this Mac dealer is, your information is nearly useless.
