Logitech Unveils V550 Nano Mouse

Logitech Unveils V550 Nano Mouse

by , 10:35 AM EDT, August 13th, 2008

Logitech introduced its new V550 Nano wireless mouse for laptop users on Wednesday. The V550 Nano includes a Clip-and-Go dock that lets users attach the mouse to their laptop when it isn't in use.

The clip attaches to the outside of the laptop case, and includes a special tool for removal. The laser mouse also includes what Logitech calls the Plug-and-Forget Nano-receiver, a 2.4GHz USB transceiver that protrudes only 8 millimeters and can be left in the USB port when transporting your laptop.

Battery life is rated at up to 18 months with two AA batteries, and is the only cordless mouse Logitech offers with that lifespan.

The V500 Nano requires Mac OS X 10.3 or higher and is priced at US$59.99. Logitech plans to ship the portable mouse in late August.

While I'm impressed by the battery life why is it not BT, with this stupid thing you lose a USB port "permanently". Also, who the hell is going to "clip" their mouse to their laptop, thats not going to fit in most laptop bags, besides I'm not tacking something on my baby (my MacBookPro).

I'm guessing this peripheral is not for you?

But every product has its compromises and if they are too much for you, then just pass it by. If the company has a depth of products like Logitech does, there's probably one with the right mix of design and features you will like.

I looked at the Logitech web page and the mouse looks pretty cool. Suppose you have an older Mac or God forbid, a Windows machine without bluetooth. Well this looks like a really nice cordless mouse.

The clip is cool too. Watch the little interactive video on their web site and see how they look at it. When you're going from your office to a conference room, you're not sticking your mouse in a laptop bag...

And Logitech has thought of you and all you whining DrJason, they make an even less expensive Bluetooth mouse, the V470 which isn't saddled with the extra clip feature which if you don't use if you buy the V550, Logitech will make fun of you in a posting on their web site!

Oh man, I'm going to hell.

I think this would be a great mouse for my old (bluetoothless) eMac. My desk will look neat with a wireless keyboard in front of the computer and the mouse clipped to the side. (While it's my baby, baby needs accessorizing too!)

I'm sorry about the rant and yes obviously this is not a product for me. But I just don't understand using a wireless mouse that has a proprietary dongle, why not get a usb BT dongle and then have the ability to use a BT mouse and keyboard and all the other BT accessories out there. And come-on how often is anybody carrying around a laptop without putting it in a bag

Subject: Great alternative to BT mice

The reason people don't use BT for mice is because BT mice suck. I've bought 6 BT mice over the past 2 years, and only one of them works right (the logitech one). The others get behind in tracking and then catch up all at once the same way a keyboard buffer does in a poorly designed program. The one BT mouse that worked right (i.e., didn't get behind and then catch up all at once) had a terrible feel that was irremediable.

A wired mouse has a great feel and much better responsiveness than BT, but the problem with using a wired mouse with a laptop is that they thrash your USB ports. The same applies to wireless mouse with large dongles. Theses Nano mice are the perfect compromise -- no thrashed USB port _and_ a mouse that operates like a real
