OWC Extends Warranties on Storage Solutions [UPDATED]

OWC Extends Warranties on Storage Solutions [UPDATED]

by , 5:05 PM EDT, September 2nd, 2008

Other World Computing (OWC) has extended the warranties to three years on its line of high capacity, FireWire/USB 2.0 storage solutions.

The warranty changes, which triple the coverage for one product, are as follows:

  1. Mercury On-The-Go Bus Powered Portable Solutions from 1 year to 3-year warranty
  2. Mercury Elite-AL Pro Single Drive Storage Solutions from 2 year to 3 year warranty
  3. Mercury Elite-AL Pro Dual-Drive Storage Solutions from 2 year to 3 year warranty
  4. Mercury Elite-AL Pro RAID and Mirror Solutions from 2 year to 3 year warranty
  5. Mercury Elite Pro Classic Portable Solutions from 2 year to 3 year warranty

The 2 year warranty remains in place for the OWC Neptune single drive storage solution.

[UPDATE: On September 4, OWC informed TMO that the new warranty terms will be retroactive on all units purchased in 2008. This updates the information the author initially provided in the comments below.]

Is this for new products ... or are they extending the warranty on items they've already sold.

My AL-Pro RAID has already failed once. The replacement product recently began generating error warnings.

Two enclosures. Two failures. Will never buy again.

Please substantiate the problems you have had with what you bought. Otherwise your opinion is worthless.

If you have have had a problem with OWC (with whom I have no relationship, I assure you) that has been unsatisfactory, please let us all know. If you're trolling, you won't reply and your post is likely to be deleted.

According to OWC, the new warranty terms are in effect for the applicable drives bought on Sep 2 or later.

I didn't realize mods were permitted to conduct themselves in such a disrespectful manner.

FYI, sometimes it's not particularly clear if someone is logged in or not until posting the comment. Then, logging in redirects a user back to the main forum index, not the individual post.

Compound that with being on an iPhone, where you can't cut-and-paste a response that's already been typed before realizing your login has expired and you can easily see why someone would post under "guest."

Since you don't like it, maybe you should use your powers to eliminate "guest" posts.

I've had issues with OWC. In fact, I no longer purchase from them nor do I recommend them.

Unfortunately, my purchasing department went with their RAID solution.

The first was replaced within a month after it generated endless "-36" errors. The replacement spit out a series of those errors about a week ago.

Also unfortunately, because the product was replaced, all the data was lost. Kind of defeats the purpose of the RAID, doesn't it.

Disrespectful? I don't think so - it's the job of a moderator to moderate. There is much clogging up of these forums with trolls and spammers who make many, many posts (a large proportion hopefully that you never get to see) in a very similar style, saying that something or someone or some organisation is crap. And that's all they say. Sometimes it's quite obvious that it's trolling, sometimes it's less so. When it is obvious, the post is often effectively deleted.

Since you have now substantiated your complaint against OWC, I can well see your point. Fair enough. And you are not an anonymous coward - for that I apologise.
