Second Microsoft Ad with Gates & Seinfeld: The Family

Second Microsoft Ad with Gates & Seinfeld: The Family

by , 12:15 PM EDT, September 12th, 2008

Microsoft has published its second in a series of ads designed to promote, well, no one knows yet. It's called "The Family."

The ad is available officially at Microsoft's Website and is also available on YouTube.

(Visit the Microsoft link above to play.)

In the ad, Bill, who has a giant "moon house hovering over Seattle like a mother ship", and Jerry, "who has so many cars he gets caught in his own traffic" are just temporary members of The Family. They talk about connecting with real people, have odd discussions, gross out the daughter, and, after they're kicked out, wonder what's next in computing.

There was generally negative reaction to the first Gates and Seinfeld ad, but Microsoft advised that the first one was just a warm up. With this ad, Microsoft hits its stride. So to speak.

This one is funny in a stupid way. Very amateuish. But 10x too long. Actually so agonizingly long, it gets painful. Kept thinking "Let it end." Not tightly focused like Mac vs. PC. And what is the point, "connecting with real people"? MS should connect with a decent ad agency.

It's just highlighting how long it takes to do something on Windows... "Do you want to do that?", "Are you sure you want to do that?", "I'm about to do this, is this what you want to do?", "Click yes to do that"....

Swing and a miss, strike 2. Never was a big Seinfield fan to begin with, maybe that's the problem?

It certainly shows how totally out of touch Microsoft has become. Any more irony may result in internal bleeding.

The ad is long because Windows is running in the background looking for a device driver.

I've decided that this add has nothing to do with Microsoft or Windows. This is Bill Gates trying to buy some kind of public identity for himself besides crashing computers.

Parts of the ad are quite good. Unfortunately it's the parts without Gates - he is overshadowed by practically everything else in the ad, and becomes almost invisible. The line "Gates & Seinfield" is used twice just to remind you that he is there.

The only explanation for these ads is that Microsoft has some fabulous technical advance that will be the denouement of its otherwise inexplicably bizarre ads.

I think the ads are funny and think Bill Gates is very funny in them.

Do I think they will sell Microsoft products or create a warmer fuzzier perception of Microsoft. Nope.

Subject: Games?

"When is this coming out?" - It sure looked like the kid was playing a game. Does Microsoft make games? I know they make the X-Box but do they author the games? OK, so Gates doesn't say they do, but it's interesting that the only computerish part of the ad shows the kid playing a game. (What? computerish isn't a word? Go away red lines!)

I agree the ad is too long, but I did chuckle a few times and I think Gates deadpans pretty well. A few more of these and he'll be ready for a stint on 30-Rock or The Office.

But would I buy... um, what are they selling? Conquistadors?

I liked how Gates was still working his "conquistadors" They'll break in eventually. Maybe that's the point of these ads, since Windows is the enterprise standard its "Shoes for industry" (Now that's food for thought.)

Subject: it's called drawing a parallel

The commercial shows some rich people trying to relate to regular folk, until both sides get pissed off and the rich people leave. Microsoft can't relate to regular users and their needs, and just abandons them with Vista.

It's the only possible explanation for creating such lame ads. They have a death wish. Besides, the ads reveal that Bill Gates is one lousy actor.

Gates has finally gone senile. Seinfeld is just a whore.

You must be living in cave on a deserted island not to know that MS makes Games. Ever heard of halo. But then again a MAC is like a toy, good for kids and sub users....

Yes, thanks guest, very enlightening. I do love it when guests hide behind their anonymity. It's so... macho. I get a little bit horny when they do that.

However, he/she/it is right. Microsoft Game Studios has churned out some good stuff over the years. My favourite? Age of Empires.

Anyway... I don't get why these commercials are so long. When/where do they screen? Are they only web commercials? Surely, they don't make it to TV?

Actually, guest is wrong.

Halo was written by Bungie, who was originally a Mac game house that Microsoft bought in order to get Halo (it was originally going to be released for the Mac).

In other words, they bought Halo. They didn't develop it.

Age of Empires was developed by Ensemble Studios in 1997. Microsoft bought them in 2000/1. Microsoft Flight Simulator (which is one of the most famous games associated with Microsoft) was developed by subLOGIC in 1982. Microsoft bought them (actually BAO) around 1995.

I'm always puzzled by the idea that Windows machines are serious because there are games for it, but Mac isn't because there aren't. There's also the ignorance about the "aren't," but I can correct ignorance. It's illogic that throws me for a loop.

Beat me to it. You are 100% correct.

Ah well, that's what you get for being inflammatory and conciliatory in the same post.

All I care to know was the Microsoft Games logo in the launch vid left the most lasting impression. Power of the label. Whatever.

I still get turned on by guests talking dirty.

Second ad is as pointless and stupid as the first.

Truly a colossal waste of money by M$...but is anyone really shocked by that?
