Security Update 2008-006 Patches Long List of Tiger Issues

Security Update 2008-006 Patches Long List of Tiger Issues

by , 11:10 AM EDT, September 16th, 2008

Apple released Security Update 2008-006 for Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Mac OS X Server 10.4.11 Monday evening. The update addressed issues with fonts, Directory Services, the Finder, graphics, and more.

The update also addressed an issue where someone with access to the login screen could change a user's password, patched an X11 hole that could lead to unauthorized session control, fixed a problem that could allow a maliciously crafted PICT image to lead to arbitrary code execution, and corrected an issue where a local user could gain access to the PPP password.

Security Update 2008-006 requires Mac OS X 10.4.11, and the same security patches are also included in Apple's Mac OS X 10.5.5 update. The update is free and available via Apple's Software update application, or as a downloadable installer at the Apple Support Web site.

I installed it and now a number of applications won't open such as mail.

Is the update the cause of your problems, or is it something else?

When you say that your applications don't 'open', what do you actually mean? Have you looked in your console to see what the error messages are?

Subject: Security Update 2008-006 Locked Up System

Made the mistake of allowing security updates automatically on my old iMac (G4 iLamp). The latest security update toasted the system....complete lockup and no chance of getting back the "spinning wheel." Had to put it into Firewire mode and trash the Library in the System folder and then reload the OS via an external DVD drive (the internal drive is flakey and, with the Security "Update" in place, the unit would NOT recognise an external drive...). Used my old iBook (thanks goodness had not sold it yet...) as the Host unit to access the HD in the iLamp via Firewire. Guess Apple ended up with some Windoze engineers!!
