Apple Updates Migration and DVD/CD Sharing for New Laptops

Apple Updates Migration and DVD/CD Sharing for New Laptops

by , 9:15 AM EDT, October 17th, 2008

Apple released an updated version of its Migration and DVD/CD Sharing application for Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5.5 on Friday. The update improved compatibility with the new unibody aluminum MacBook and MacBook Pro models Apple introduced on October 14.

Migration Assistant 1.0.6 is now the latest version for Mac OS X 10.4.11 users, and Migration Assistant 1.2.3 is the current version for Mac OS X 10.5.5 users. The updates are available via the Software Update application, or as downloadable installers at the Apple Support Web site.

Subject: Migration Assistant Problem?

I updated the Migration Assistant through Software Update yesterday. Ever since then, my boot times on my 16 month old MacBook are about six minutes, where they were averaging about a minute before the update.

One step that seems to have resolved the problem is to switch my external drive from FireWire to USB 2.0. Now, I'm back to the one minute boot time. But I appreciate the better performance of FireWire compared to USB 2.0, when things are working correctly.

Does anyone have any advice to offer? Thanks.

Try setting the boot drive to the internal drive under startup drive preferences.

The internal drive is the boot drive. The external HD is primarily used for Time Machine. The drive runs fine so I do not believe the problem is related to the external HD.

Since doing the update I'm no longer able to save web pages as pdfs using the key board P + command and P + command + option anyone else have this problem?

I use that feature a lot. No problems with that.

After a few days of checking everything, I found the problem.

It looks like a problem with a scanner that I've had for a long time. When it's not connected, everything's good.

Subject: Problems with USB hard disk

After installing this update on my MacBook, my USB external hard drive fails to be recognized, other USB devices (stick, keyboard, USB 3G modem) work properly.
dmesg shows:
kernel[0]: disk1s1: device/channel is not attached.

The hard drive works properly on a linux box, on another Mac still not upgraded, and on the same MacBook booted with Kubuntu (live version).

Anyone knows how to fix this, or how to uninstall the update?
