Apple Tops Fortune Most Admired Companies List
by , 10:10 AM EDT, October 29th, 2008
Fortune's Top 20 Most Admired Companies list is out and Apple took the top spot, beating out companies like Google, Starbucks and FedEx. The Mac and iPod maker also topped the Fortune most admired company for innovation list.
"It is a tribute to its CEO that Apple, which ten years ago seemed headed for the slag heap, is No. 1 on this list. Steve Jobs has always had a knack for weaving magic out of silicon and software," Fortune noted. "But who knew he could build a $24 billion (in sales) company on the strength of a portable jukebox and a computer with a single-digit market share?"
Fortune asked over 3,700 people from several industries to pick the ten companies they admire the most, and the businesses that floated to the top all sport strong innovation, leadership and financial strength records.
Rounding out the rest of the top ten companies were Berkshire Hathaway, General Electric, Google, Toyota, Starbucks, FedEx, Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, and Goldman Sachs.
Apple also took the top spot on the Fortune 10 Most Admired for innovation. Coming in behind Apple were Nike, Medco Health Solutions, Procter & Gamble, Herman Miller, Walt Disney, Fortune Brands, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, McDonald's, and ProLogis.
On Apple's innovation track record, Fortune commented "iPod, iPhone, iMac. Apple is the "i" word in action. Led by Steve Jobs, the company has disrupted three different industries -- computers (the Mac), music (the iPod) and movies (Pixar)."

Apple does not own Pixar and never did. Disney owns it now.

So I guess it means that three is the correct number but you have to add cell phones and remove movies.
On a stylistic vein, I'm not sure that 'disrupted' is the best word for what Apple has done. It seems too negative.
Overall it is a nice pat on the back for Apple though.

Disruptive Technology is one of the current buzzwords for something that used to shift paradigms or revolutionized the industry. Yeah it sounds negative like they orchestrated a technical coup e' etat, putsch, or or installed Flash adverts on a web site (Oh the humanity!)
My daughter works at an Apple Retail Store and I can vouch that Apple is worthy of the recognition. They have treated her so well and she is so happy in that job that she would do anything for an Apple customer, even when she's off the clock. How many people can say that about a job? Further, going into an Apple Store is more than shopping... it's a party. Kids playing on computers in their special area... live music on Friday nights... knowledgeable staff on the ready to assist with any issues you might have with your Apple products... and free seminars to help you learn anything you need to know about their products. Try finding that elsewhere. Attribute the success to sales of iPods, iPhones and computers, but the most innovative characteristic of Apple in my opinion is their valuing of their employees and their customers.
