Boinx Unveils BoinxTV

Boinx Unveils BoinxTV

by , 8:20 AM EST, November 11th, 2008

Boinx Software announced the immediate availability of BoinxTV 1.0 on Tuesday. BoinxTV is an application that turns your Mac into a live video recording studio.

The application supports up to three cameras, lets users add special effects, titles and captions in while recording, and includes chroma key support. It also ships with over 30 video layers like video switcher, RSS crawler, lower third, interview setup, and more, and users can make their own layer templates with Apple's Quartz Composer.

BoinxTV is priced at US$499 and is available at the Boinx Software Web site. A sponsored version that requires a BoinxTV credit in every video is also available for $199.

$499 huh? Why would you pay *more* for this than an established, polished tool like Wirecast? Seems mildly interesting, but at this price, it's well out of the range of the hobbyist, which seems to be their target market. I just don't see many video bloggers plunking down the cash for this when less-capable but workable alternatives exist at a tiny fraction of the price.

Someday a company will release a tool like this at the under-$100 range, and with a much-simpler interface (Wirecast is close). At that point, the market for apps like this will explode, and the quality of YouTube videos will increase dramatically. At this price point, I just don't see the market for this category of apps being very large.

Is Wirecast that tool? Because the one I found from Flip4mac is $449. That isn't that much off the price of Boinx. $50 doesn't seem it would make a difference to the hobbyist. can you provide a link to this cheaper Wirecast alternative?

This is a silly tool for $499, or even $199! Wishful thinking by the folks at Boinx Software, in this, (or any), economy!

They should have released this far before the new non-firewire MacBooks were introduced.

A "pro" is going to use a better tool. An "amature" or hobbyist has much more affordable solutions available, and can only use USB anyway with their new MacBook.

An "amature" Flip video camera owner doesn't require this kind of software!

My point is that Wirecast is $50 cheaper and - for the hobbyist (if you can call someone who would drop $500 on software a "hobbyist") - a much better entry-level tool. I've used Wirecast and have trained entry-level video folks in its use. Having tried the demo of Boinx, I feel comfortable saying that it would be much less intuitive for the folks I've worked with.

I just don't get the target market for this software.
