Nancy's Guide: How Do I Do That On A Mac/PC?
September 27th, 2001

"Help! I have to use a PC(or)Mac at work, but I have a Mac(or)PC at home. How do I keep them straight! How do I do stuff on the one I am not used to using. It's driving me crazy!"

Sound familiar to anyone? I face this problem every day so I thought it might be somewhat helpful to create a guide that will help Observers cross platforms when necessary. The table that follows is based on Mac OS 9 for the Mac and Microsoft Windows NT for the PC platform. It is important for me that I make one thing clear from the outset. The PC with which I am familiar is operated in a state government setting. It is hooked up to a LAN, and there are some restrictions imposed by this system that may not be in place in a home or non-governmental setting. Also, I am by no means an expert on Windows, I just have to endure it at work. Therefore, I will gladly modify my comparisons if Observers write in with additional information about the PC platform.

Change the design of the icon or the folder

1. Download the icons you want to use and save them on your desktop.

2. Click on and highlight the icon you want to copy and then choose "Get Info" from the File pull-down menu.

3. In the Get Info window, the icon you have selected will appear at the top. Click it once (a black frame will surround it), then choose "Copy" from the Edit pull-down menu.

4. Now, repeat the "Get Info" routine with the blank folder or file you want to attach the new icon to; select it and choose "Get Info."

5. Again, click the old icon in the Get Info window, so that the frame appears, but this time choose "Paste" from the Edit Pull-down menu. The new icon should be pasted onto the folder and replace the old one.
