The Apple Impact: iTeen Insight On The Good, The Bad, And The Apple

It seems now that everyone is trying to jump on Apple's color bandwagon. I personally have seen phones by VTech, CD-Players by Audiovox, lamps and more, all with Apple's look and colors. It seems that strawberry, tangerine, blueberry, lime, grape, and now graphite are the most popular colors around. You will find that a lot of these products that sport the transparent iMac-like plastics sport these exact colors too. I do have to say it's pretty awesome that you can now buy a VTech phone to match your lime iMac, but not all of this is good. Some people are trying to take Apple's look and feel (anyone else remember that company in Redmond, Washington a few years back?). So far there have been two iMac “wannabes” in the computer industry, but the one that flames me most is the E•Power by Future Power USA (FPUSA).

As most of you know, Apple fought FPUSA a while back and won an injunction against the company. Now FPUSA is coming back saying that Apple has no right to do this. I'm sorry but a machine that looks that close to an iMac surely hits copyright enfringement even if it runs Windows and it's color is tinted just slightly off. These are simply things they added in so that they could attempt to avoid a possible lawsuit. Shows you how much brain power they used in thinking this through. Obviously, they should learn not to mess with Mr. Jobs as he really doesn't like this sort of thing. Go to FPUSA's site and just take a look at their E•Power computer. The specs are very very similar; they even have matching 15" displays. What is interesting is that even the sideburns are the same. Notice that the line that divides the upper plastic and lower plastic on the E•Power follows almost the exact same line as the route on the iMac. These details are really really too close to the iMac for Future Power to whine.

It's really a shame that these people cannot think for themselves. Why is it that everyone copies from Apple? Simple, Apple is genius! Plain and simple. Apple started the personal computer revolution. They put the GUI to work for average people, not large corporations, and more. I find it a shame that these clone corporations have to steal from each other just to think they can get somewhere. I'm only 15 and I realize the only way to actually get a hit product is to make one from scratch. To me, the kind of copying going on like FPUSA's is like cheating on a test. Really, same specs, same grade. It's pathetic.

Well, enough of my complaining. I do believe Apple has had a great impact on computers in 2000. Mac OS X is putting the power of GeekWare (I'm using this lightly, Linux and Unix users) from the Linux and UNIX operating systems to use on your average everyday Mac. It will bring together the kind of power and elegance not seen in off the shelf operating systems.

I would like to make a claim right now. I predict Apple will have a great sucess with Mac OS X. I strongly believe that Microsoft will see this and that Windows will also be running on a UNIX-based system some time in the future. Its possible I could be wrong, but from where I'm sitting, Apple is leading the pack and everyone is bound to follow.
