Need A Larger OS X Desktop? Try VirtualDesktop For Multiple Virtual Desktops!
January 13th, 2003

VirtualDesktop 2.1.1 ($30 Demoware)
CodeTek

Sure, the Mac has some of the largest displays available anywhere, such as the 15.2" PowerBook, or the 23" Cinema HD Display; but even this may not be enough screen real estate, depending on what you do. Of course, you could buy some extra display adapters and monitors, but that may not be affordable. If only there was a way to get multiple desktops with software...

VirtualDesktop is a program that will create multiple virtual desktops, and allow you to access any one at a time. You can see what desktops are active, and what is on each one of them, via a convenient Pager interface. This Pager shows the entire virtual space, with a pane for each element of the virtual space. If you click in a pane, you'll be brought to that virtual space.

The Pager Interface, with IE in Desktop 1

What we found compelling is that the program provides what we think is the intuitive ability to drag a window among multiple desktops. Unfortunately, only 2 panes are available until you pay the shareware fee, but we were still able to get a feel for the power of this ability. There are many other options available, if you click on the bar at the bottom of the Pager.

Lots of Other Preferences are Available
(click for a larger version)

Some of the more useful preferences include assigning Hotkeys for navigation among panes, naming and assigning hotkeys to each of your desktops (up to 100!) and setting appearance options so that your desktops look just right.

So get the big desktop you deserve and try VirtualDesktop today!
