Sure, the Mac is a great machine when it comes to dealing with fonts, but at some point, you may get overwhelmed with the sheer amount of fonts you have to deal with. If you'd like to get a closer look your fonts, beyond the mere names in the Font menu, you should check out FontBuddy.
After you launch the Font Buddy window, you'll be presented with a view of all characters in the font. If you want, you can change the size and style of the displayed font. But the FontBuddy window also offers Character, Font Sample and Font Info tabs.
Character will allow you to view a specific character in the font. the Font sample window will show a phrase using the currently selected font. Finally, Font Info will show detailed info about the font name, format, and other characteristics of interest.
FontBuddy will help you learn as much as possible about the fonts on your system.
